I think I remember Steve commenting on the old forum that the master tape is not lost but is in the possession of a Band member who refuses to let it be used, due to money disputes. Given what I know about the history, I would guess it's Levon who has it.

I'm quite sure it's remixed. Play it against the LP. It sounds very different.

The K2 remasters done by Fantasy are decent but quite different from XRCD in the following ways:
-XRCDs use the original master tape as a source. It is my understanding that the K2 Fantasy re-issues use Japanese copy tapes of this material.
-XRCDs are always mastered in a custom mastering room by either Alan Yoshida at JVC/OceanWay Mastering in Hollywood or by Hiromichi Takiguchi at the Yokahama JVC mastering center. The Fantasy K2 reissues use other engineers.
-XRCDs are always pressed on one highly customized line at the Yokahama pressing facility. The K2 remasters are pressed on one of the regular lines.
-XRCDs are always mastered onto a Sony 9000 magneto optical disc at 20 bit. This is then used until the final pressing stage when bit down to 16 bit must occur. It is my understanding that the Fantasy K2s use a standard 1630 storage.
The similarities between the two are that both use the K2 A/D converter and both use K2 laser cutting on the pressing end.

The Fantasy K2 issues are quite decent but I do note some obvious compression and limiting on the discs I have heard, which will have the effect of making them play "loud" but in reality masks detail.

I am surprised that the K2's are not from the master tape. To my ear, they sound absolutely identical to the XRCD's for the five CD's I've compared and from some of the reviews I've read.

I checked out the reissue cd, and it says that the additional material was mixed by Andrew Sandoval in Hollywood in May 2000.
If it is Levon, he is quite angry as I understand it. Wouldn't it be cool to give him a few grand just to get the tape from him? It's gonna happen anyway. But methinks that it'll happen from Capitol and not somebody who can do ultimate justice (haven't heard that term in a while!!) to the tape. By the way, it didn't seem all that wrong when I listened to it. Maybe what I was angry with was the fact that the bonus tracks didn't fit in and should have been left off. Sorry, but once you have ended an album with King Harvest, (like "One For My Baby") what can you follow it up with except silence?

That's kind of crazy if the master to the Band's self titled album is being withheld and isn't even lost/destroyed

I have an XRCD2 of the "Art Pepper + Eleven". It sounds very good in my opinion. A lot more presence and life than the MFSL release.

That is a title I would LOVE to see Steve do on SACD.
