The partial concerts that are on The Great Deceiver will be presented in full, or as full as they can be.

... minus the fall '73 shows excerpted on discs 2 and 4. The new box focuses exclusively on the spring-summer '74 U.S. tour.

Just stumble across another title of this ilk. It's outside the realm of this series, but is distinctively Crimsonesque in origin. Stick Men, for those of you who are unfamiliar, consists of Tony Levin, Pat Mastelloto & Markus Reuter. A special edition of their new disc, Deep, is available with DVA-A. This includes 5.1 mix, plus an hour of video footage from a concert. If you're daring enough to try something a little different, then this one is for you. It's an excellent subwoofer workout, too.

    Hi there folks,
I've posted this as a separate thread elsewhere on the board but am re-posting here in case anyone has missed it.

The booklet accompanying the The Road To Red is currently being compiled by the team at DGM. Were you at any of the gigs? Do you have any photographs, flyers, ticket stubs or any other relevant memorabilia from that final tour of that incarnation of King Crimson?

If you were at any of the gigs what do you remember? Was this your first time seeing KC in action? Who were the band on with that night? How did KC compare to the last time? We’re hoping to include some selected eye-witness accounts of the final tour of 1974 in the booklet for The Road To Red so get in touch with your memories and views via thesidsmith (at) gmail dot com

David Singleton's comments in todays DGM diary. Interesting:

Finally! At Last! Enfin! Finalmente! The hi res versions of The Great Deceiver shows are complete. The end of a quite ridiculous task. When I originally volunteered to do this, I naively assumed that it might take four or five days to reassemble from the original analague mixes. Over five weeks later (admittedly not full time), they are now complete. A ridiculous waste of my limited time on this beautiful earth, more than slightly begging the question, "was it worth it?"...

I note the comments by Mark and others on the guestbook about the pros and cons of remixing. Ironically, as it proved it would have been far quicker to remix than to build coherent shows out of the existing mixes. Fortunately, I am persuaded that those mixes have a historic relevance that makes them more "relevant" than pristrine new mixes, however well balanced - in the same way that one can tolerate mad imperfections in board recordings simply because they are a historic artefact - the way the show was mixed on the night. In assembling Thrakattak, for example, we never revisited the multitracks but accepted the board mix as part of the performance. That was how the parts were blended on the night for good or ill.

That said, I do have my doubts. Both about the mixes (which I would agree are generally more drum heavy and front-line light than I would hear them now - but hey, they are Robert Fripp's mixes and I just made a Vicar album with no drums at all, so what do I know). I am also ambivalent about the value of super "hi res". An upsampled version of the CD release competes well with these lengthily and expensively compiled new transfers. My meters warn me that there is now considerable activity up in the stratosphere at 20 khz, but as none (or few) of us can hear it "directly", it is difficult to know if it is or is not helpful. I shall get a young child with bat ears to have a listen (so scrub the opening comments about Finally! At Last! Enfin! Finalmente!)

Question for anybody in the know. So, is this set going to include ALL of those shows, listed above, including everything on the Great Deceiver set?

I count 38 shows. So for cd, no, since they mentioned that the set would contain approx. 20 cd's. If they decided to put them all (or many) on DVD-A, I'd say it's possible.

This doesn't exactly come across as a ringing endorsement, does it? As tempting as this package might sound for those of us who love live Crimson of this vintage, I'm still on the fence as to whether or not it will be worth it. We'll see how much they're charging for this bad boy.

Agreed. TCoL is better than most people think it is. At this point, the 2000s KC is so well-documented that the reConstruKction notion doesn't strike me as overly compelling but I would still be curious to hear what Steven might wrest from the tapes, live or studio.

With full shows from what was included on The Great Deceiver, plus all the additonal material included, it looks like they have a willing customer here.

Another interesting hint about a future release from Robert Fripp in his diary:

A while ago they said the remaining few releases in the KC Collectors Club would be DVD's, the 2 disc Argentina '94 being the first (of the last)....I suppose this 2008 thing is the next one.

    How very cool !

DGM live have just released all 4 'warm up' shows from the double duo band, The Construction of Light, shows in Nashville from May of 2000. Of the 4 KC played, I went to 3 of them. A buddy of mine flew up from Dallas for the Saturday night, May 20th show. He also saw Crim back in the early-mid 70s several times and hope he chimes in on the "On the Road to Red" thread Sid Smith has here on Steve H's forum.

    AT LAST! Woohoo!

Interesting talk on the art of mixing in this article as well.

I don't care if he doesn't see the value in hi rez, i do. Mix them up and release them! It's not about frequency response, at lest that you can hear. I do have to wonder about the hearing of a fellow who has been exposed to a bit of loud music in his lifetime along with a bit of age related hearing loss directing mixes

Hey, look at that, he replies to my complaint both here and on the DGM forum that it seemed that this set was delaying the other three 40ths, and about the value of this set (which he still doesn't really address - most of these shows are already available and many of use have them.) A minor moment of fame for me.
