I don't think I'd recognize her and I doubt I've heard her music. I'm not missing out on much am I?

    Why would you think that?

Well, I just listened to a few tracks off of her new album and I don't know what I would call her other than "pop." It sure isn't rock, jazz, classical or country. Neither is it Katy Perry or Justin Beiber or any of that crowd, but "pop" is a big tent.

I don't want to be called a working stiff, but it could be viewed as acceptable shorthand.

Ugh. She's going to be on the new Brian Wilson solo album with several other female, uh, non-"pop stars".

Agreed, and I don't consider pop to be a pejorative like some might. She certainly seems to be drawing upon a lot of pop cultural iconography in the way that she presents herself as well.

I'm going to make Wolfram's day and (aside from this benign comment) stay completely out of this thread!!! :pineapple:

The Grantland article is interesting. I was intrigued by the David Nichtern quote that says she's like “the outer manifestation of Marilyn Monroe with the inner manifestation of Leonard Cohen.” My first impression was that she sounds like late-period Roxy Music covering The Velvet Underground. The Dylan influence is interesting - I suppose one might say that she is one of the most faithful type of Dylan disciples in that she is consciously manufacturing an artistic persona.

Her music is not really my thing at all but it is interesting to read about.

For what it's worth, wikipedia (English and German) comes up with a whole parade of labels for her albums. Pop, Baroque Pop, Dream Pop, Indie Pop, Sadcore  and Trip Hop o_O. Pop obviously is the common theme, but there also seems to be the need for a further category to move it away from just Pop. I personally tagged her as Indie Pop in my collection, mostly because I like the oxomoronic feel of that term.

When is Lana gonna go full 2000's diva on us and come up with an alter ego? Isn't she overdue?

There is a sad feeling with a lot of her music though and that's one thing I like about it.
