"Watched the 1920 Der Golem last night. Odd in that there was no audio track at all. Weird to watch something completely silent." - MCOW1

What release do you have of this? My Kino edition has music.

It's the Masterworks of German Horror box by Elite. Going to pick up the Kino as it seems to be about 18 minutes longer, also.

I also highly recommend Kino's new 2 disc 'Nosferatu' with (surprisingly) much improved picture, and both German and English intertitles.

I just dipped my toe in the Warner Archives waters and watched my first two purchases from that "burn to order" collection: Westbound and Urgh! A Music War. I was quite pleased with both. Assessing the movie itself, Westbound is a pretty average western and not on the level of the other collaborations between Randolph Scott and Budd Boetticher. Urgh! was as much fun as it always was despite missing one performance that was previously on the VHS version.

    Regards,

Saw "The Wrestler" and "Knowing" the other night.
    Both good movies.
Especially "The Wrestler". Mickey Rourke is as good as
everybody said he was in this movie.
Although I'm not really a fan of Nicholas Cage, he was great
    in "Knowing"..
There's a plane crash in this movie that's worth the price of admission.

  9. Could be due to the "running" speed of the film since silents often had variable running times. They were measured by feet not by times because of the variability of the projectors.

  10. For a truly campy moment you should get "Doc Savage". Far, far from even being a good movie it still is fun to watch if you're in the right mood.

I am on a classic British cinema kick right now. The Ladykillers was yesterday and A Matter of Life and Death is on deck for tonight.

I have The Ladykillers on preorder, on BD, from the U.K. I'm getting it with the BD of The Dam Busters, I think, the last week of September. I have not even checked the Wee-juns of these since I have the Momitsu in waiting.

I watched my new Starman BD as second time this morn. When I tried to enjoy it day before yesterday but the phone rang and rang.....ugh. I was on planet enjoy this morn. "....yellow light means go very fast...".

Wow, I finally saw the Blu-Ray for CHILDREN OF MEN.

The action sequences are incredible. I have no idea how they managed to choreograph such long tracking shots incorporating so many elements: the ambush in the forest, the incredible journey through the battle at the end . . . I assume a lot had to be CGI-stitched together but watching it in real-time the overall effect was stunning. The battle scenes at the climax are better than I've seen in any war movie, including SAVING PRIVATE RYAN and BLACK HAWK DOWN.

The one thing this film had that almost all other films do not is a real, palpable sense of violence and chaos. So many other action films lapse into videogame mode or feign chaos by jiggling the camera or intercutting rapidly, lurching you out of the drama. CHILDREN's long tracking shots incorporate the action seamlessly into the narrative.

I don't know who's more responsible for the film's look and style -- the director or director of photography -- but he/she should have won a bunch of awards. Visually, this is the best film I've seen in a long time and a real treat in HD.
