Are there any songs that are preceded by "lead-in" songs which are usually instrumentals and last usually less than two minutes long? There are also some "lead-out" songs, which describes that which closes out a well-known song.

    For example:
    Styx:
Equinox: "Prelude 12" precedes "Suite Madame Blue"
Pieces of Eight: "The Message" precedes "Lords of the Ring," while the title track "Pieces of Eight" is led out by "Aku-Aku."
Paradise Theater: "A.D. 1928" precedes "Rockin' the Paradise," while "Half-Penny, Two-Penny" is followed by "A.D. 1958" and "State Street Sadie."

    Brad Paisley:
    Wheelhouse: "On-ryou" (Japanese: 幽 女) precedes "Karate."

    Kansas:
Point of Know Return: "The Spider" precedes "Portrait (He Knew)"

    Eric Clapton:
Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs: Entire track is almost evenly divided: the first part which is comprised of guitar histrionics between Clapton and Duane Allman, makes up the entire single edit version. The remainder is the piano part written by Jim Gordon (and, as some biographers would rightly say, Rita Coolidge).

    Queen:
News of the World: "We Will Rock You" precedes "We Are the Champions."

    Steve Miller Band:
Fly Like an Eagle: Title track is often preceded by "Space Intro."
Book of Dreams: "Jet Airliner" is often preceded by the synthesizer-driven opening "Threshold." Another track, "Sacrifice," had its intro listed as a separate track by Miller in 1979, which he dubbed "Electro Lux Imbroglio."

I'm not 100% sure if I understand what you're asking, but what about "Sirius" preceding "Eye in the Sky" on the Alan Parsons Project album of the same name? Sirius runs about 1:55.

I could swear we had a thread about these not all that long ago.

Here's a classic example: on Elton's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, "Funeral for a Friend" precedes "Love Lies Bleeding".

Thank you, but my editing time ran out.

Gilbert O'Sullivan sometimes includes short songs, called "Intro" and "Outro," on his albums. When included, the songs are used to introduce and close the album/side and are sometimes humorous (the first "Intro" on "Southpaw" features a chorus saying that it's a pleasure to introduce his LP...as long as they get paid).

    Vocally speaking:

On the Beach Boys' Friends album, "Meant for You" works as a prelude to the title track.

The Carpenters' debut LP Offering is bookended by an intro and outro titled, respectively, "Invocation" and "Benediction."

Also Pink Floyd's "Pigs on the Wing" from Animals probably counts since it opens and closes the album.

And if you want to get obscure, the Tokens' Intercourse opens with a short piece called "It Amazing to Be Alive," which is reprised as the second-to-last track.

Deep Pruple "Speed King" has an intro that was chopped off the American versions.

gregorya I approve of this message

Zozo Sisters (Linda Ronstadt & Ann Savoy) "Adieu False Heart" is a good example; the album begins with "Opening" ( :32) and ends with "Closing" (1:08). Both instrumental.

    Great album too :)

A Prelude at the beginning of ELO's concept album Eldorado segues into "Can't Get It Out of My Head" and is briefly reprised as a lead-out at the end of the album.
And of course, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" into "A Little Help From My Friends" is the template.

"Horizon" by the Carpenters opens with "Aurora" and closes with "Eventide."

"Chipmunk Rock" by The Chipmunks opens with a short intro with The Chipmunks singing "Down By The Old Mill Stream" but as soon as Dave leaves (after telling them not to sing rock 'n' roll) they break into "Betty Davis Eyes." As soon as Dave returns they return back to singing "Down By The Old Mill Stream."

"Family Guy - Live In Las Vegas" opens with a fanfare and an intro and closes with bow music.

"Hot Show" by Prozzäk opens with a brief greeting by Simon and Milo, and closes with "Simon's Final Thoughts" where Simon briefly recaps his experiences, and then it is followed by a short audioplay that tells the story of Simon and Milo.

"Listen To The Warm" by Rod McKuen opens with a prologue called "A Cat Named Sloopy" and ends with an epilogue called "One Day I'll Follow The Birds."

"Now And Then" by the Carpenters closes with a reprise of "Yesterday Once More" (which opened Side Two of the album).

"rie fu Sings The Carpenters" by rie fu opens with an original song called "Dear Karen" in English and closes with "Dear Karen" in Japanese.

If it counts, I remember reading a Springsteen fanzine where the writer was surprised at one show when he played "Meeting Across The River" followed by "Backstreets" rather than "Jungleland."

"A Day at the Races" by Queen starts and finishes with the same instrumental piece.

  14. ELO have quite a few examples that fit in this thread...

Time has its short Prologue and Epilogue pieces, while Secret Messages begins with a short unlisted track (entitled Welcome To The Show) that also bookends this album in reversed form. Balance Of Power was going to have another brief opening piece as well, but in its final mix the first song, Heaven Only Knows, begins with a cold start. Although none of these are technically standalone pieces, you could also argue that Face The Music and Discovery have pre-track introductions.

  15. Queen II also has the short Procession, which leads into "proper" first track, Father To Son...
