I love John Lennon and his music.

But I sure don't have to agree with everything he ever said.

    Nice try, though!

And yet by starting this thread you are going against everything John said.

This is like Shatner saying, "Get a life, people! It's just a TV show!"

Excellent advice. But you can only lead a horse to water - you can't make him drink.

The only thing that Lennon said about the SHMF is here:

"It's just natural, it's not a great disaster. People keep talking about it like it's The End of The Earth. It's only a rock group that split up, it's nothing important. You know, you have all the old records there if you want to reminisce."

    J.L.

We like to reminisce at SHMF.

I was just about to sit comfortably here to watch, but some early posters bought all the available popcorn.

Have you purged your house of all Beatles content yet, citizen?

Better yet, get rid of all music. Because it's not just the Beatles who inspire the hated nostalgia.

That quote was from a time when things were pushing forward, not these days of "Rock is dead, but there's still a lot of great music if you look for it".

I can only guess that by that point in his life, he may have been tired of getting asked about the Beatles all the time. He may have been projecting his feelings a bit.

What John was referring to was people living the whole 'nostalgia trip'.
He wasn't insulting everyone who enjoys his music. (or Glenn Miller's)
To turn everything into a fad, or a "remember when?" scene, ultimately cheapens the music and relegates it to the level of the Elvis ashtrays in the Graceland gift shop.

He's not trying to say to the people to stop enjoying listening Beatles music, or Glen Miller music, or watching WWII movies, he meant (perhaps in the context of the 80's, and the fact that at this time many people still wanted Beatles reunion) that it's better to live and enjoy the present, an not to confine yourself in a 60's Beatles, or any other time capsule.

  16. Let's not forget that when Lennon said that "living now" meant having to listen to Double Fantasy and the like. No thanks, I'll happily carry Glenn Miller and The Beatles around in preference to that for the rest of my days!

Well, the world hadn't ended yet in 1980. That came around 1985. :D

I choose to live as John would have wanted me to in this instance, because I have respect for his words. Thank you, John.

Ha! Translated from the original Lennon to contemporary English, what he was saying was, "Buy my new record!"

And once again we find John quoting from ELO, specifically Waterfall.

Well, I expect we'll not be seeing you trolling any Beatles threads in future then. A negative obsession can be as consuming as a positive one.

And I'm serious about purging all that Beatle content. Can't have temptation lying around!

I haven't "trolled" any Beatles threads lately. I can name about 6 Beatles threads I haven't a) posted in or b) visited that are active discussions right now.
