    So,

I have a chance to pick up the WG London CD in newish condition for ~$20 and wanted to know if it's any better than the currently available ABKCO remastered CD. What are the opinions of the experts?

    Thank you.

Both are great. Abkco remaster is probably a little better.

Thanks. I wrote to Mr. Hoffman on this too but haven't heard back yet.

I have both. Both are great. I probably would lean towards the remaster though.

    W. German better mastering, Abkco remaster better source.

    The remasters are nice.

Unless you are collecting the older discs ( they are very cool!), the new remastered discs are the way to go. Imho.

Question for you guys. Is the West German London Hot Rocks 1 'without' the Digitally-Remastered Logo the disc that I should get? I ordered a French PDMC version Hot Rocks 2 as I couldn't find much else.

Also, I believe the P33L is the 'good' London CD of Let It Bleed, no?

Should have them by the end of January so will have to give them a listen. I'm guessing they probably won't be leaps and bounds better than the 2002 DSD-remastered CDs.

I prefer my MONO version with the B side & alt version of some songs.

WG London! For the best version of Gimme Shelter get the Hot Rocks 2 WG London with the "Digitally remastered" banner.

In terms of mastering, the WG London sounds "right" to me.

Which of the London label Stones (no ABKCO on the label) were mastered by MFSL? Is this one?

IIRC, all of them were done by MFSL, including Let It Bleed.

What about the London Hot Rocks discs that do not have the 'digitally remastered' banner? Do these sound the same as the original ABKCO CD's?

All of them?!? I thought it was just the 2 Hot Rocks comps.

The truth of this is murky. MFSL denies digitally remastering or having any connection at all with any of the earliest Rolling Stones CD's despite a credit on a number of the cd's which seems to credit them. The credit is oddly worded as "Analogue to Digital Mastering by Mobile Fidelity Sound" not "Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs, Inc." (see photo)

It has been rumored that the tapes used for the CD masters came from MFSL as a result of the LP box set they issued of the Stones catalog in 1984. The tapes used in the CD masterings supposedly "fell off their truck" so to speak. ;) Will we ever find out the truth?

So revisiting this thread... After a few months of pretty extensive listening across a lot of equipment (different speakers and playback systems), between the 2002 ABKCO, the Japanese P33L and the 850 025-5 03 West German London; I can safely say I prefer the sound of the West German the most.
