OK good Who news along the same lines. When I was in Best Buy picking up the Mingus Ah Um SACD I noticed a Who CD with a sticker saying import. It turned out to be a Canadian import of Meaty Beaty. Which sounds great, natch.
I played Steve's Who's Next last Friday. My wife started to dance and I began to play air guitar (when no one was looking). Steve's mastering has a way of hitting you in the gut when you're not paying attention. I used to tire of playing my older CD (with all the bonus tracks). It now lives again.
Now the question is this: what should I do with my Astley-mastered disc? I'm thinking either a frisbee or a grape dish.
I took a shot at reconstructing Lifehouse and ended up using almost all the bonus tracks; the leftovers I stuck at the end (as bonus tracks to the recreation of Lifehouse).
Here is some good news. I bought a Mofi Who's Next shortly after the company went under for $40 and I started hearing not such great things about it so I never opened it, knowing I'd sell it. So before too long off it goes to ebay they seem to bring $175 sealed. Ive had the Steve Hoffman mastered one for years now got it from BMG music club made in USA but its the right one. Ive also had MeatyBeaty forever I just always liked it, go figure.
This could be bad news.... This does looks like potential bad news. Sorry to be the bringer. http://channels.netscape.com/ns/new.../20030113/151998103.htm&photoid=20020701NY109
Last night I ordered all the Who discs and the Buddy Holly disc from HMV. It's great that those links on the side of the page are there ("Other customers who bought Who's Next bought these CDs" ... they're all there!). Somebody should really find out if HMV is noticing anything... BoB
Who's Next is probably the only instance where I've got the MoFi and a major-label issue sitting side by side and rarely play the MoFi. Just can't bring myself to sell it, though. I guess the bonus tracks are cool, and the booklet is nice... I think HMV *has* to have noticed what's going on with that stuff. What I wonder is if they've figured out the reason people are buying the same half-dozen discs time and time again. Ryan
If they check their weblogs, they might notice the links from Steve's discography. Unfortunately, you can't buy anything using that link because it's meant to be in a frame on the HMV site, and the Javascript won't work.
Oh, good Who news. I thought for a moment thaat this thread was about Guess Who news Received my Canadian Who's next and Beaty Big etc, along with Mamas and Papas from HMV in Canada. Good stuff. I'm gonna play Who's Next once I've finished my Maurice Gibb Memorial Concert.
I'm curious... I've searched the archives, but I haven't found any comments from Steve about mastering Who's Next and MBBB. I'd be interested to hear his comments on the original recordings, and what he did when mastering.
