I was wondering whether anyone knew a source for a legible version of these liner notes. I've got the (1995) Ryko CD, and although there is a larger-size replication of the front and back covers in the booklet, I still can't read the liner notes against the background photo. Aggh!

Down here they are. Getting hold of vinyl in Christchurch is almost impossible. I could try to mail order it - but that would be a bit silly (and expensive), given the fact that I only wish to read the notes.

I've got the LP here, as I do all the 60's and 70's Zappa LP's. How can I help?

What liner notes? I don't see any notes on the MFSL CD.

    Hi Doug

In column 4, from Point 3 (DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS PIECE UNTIL YOU HAVE READ THE STORY) to the bottom of the page is completely illegible on the CD. I was hoping someone might have a copy of the text somewhere, rather than someone attempting to type it all out.

The Ryko (1995) has the lyrics and notes on the back page of the insert (as on the back of the original album). The insert folds out to reveal a larger version of the front and back covers, but they are still not LP sized, and the colors aren't quite right for reading black letters against a background of the Mothers' picture.

It might be easeir to type them. Don Preston and his colorful dress are partially obscuring them. I'll try a scan and see if they're legible.

    Is this what you're after?

edit: Hmm, not too legible here.

Doug and Ubsman, you're both ACES! :righton: :righton: Thanks guys!

Doug - oddly, the photo of the Mothers blocks out a smaller potion of the lettering on the CD than on the album.

Thanks to that "Poodle" book by Ben Watson, you can get the gist of "In The Penal Colony", and how it relates to this fine, fine, SUPER FINE album.

Through those liner notes I did actually go dig up "In the Penal Colony" and became quite enamored with the works of Franz Kafka ("The Metamorphosis", etc....) for some time afterward. Haven't read any Kafka in awhile though.....great stuff nonetheless. Thanks Frank!
