Anyone?
Hi, guys long time follower first time poster. I do not have any Pre-Emphasis CDs in my collection that I know of however I would like to purchase a confirmed CD with Pre-Emp, Pet Shop Boys "Please" 'CDP 7 46271 2.' I am currently using a minimal setup of iTunes latest version (12.6) for ripping and a PS3 for playback. Would this setup be ok for this disc? I know iTunes isn't the best for ripping Pre-Emphasis CDs but I don't have any others in my collection so it was never a concern. My real concern is will the PS3 De-Emphasize the disc? I've searched through quite a few threads and couldn't find a definitive answer to this question. Just one person said yes that it would. I do have an old and quite good dedicated CD player that will undoubtedly De-Emphasize it but I'd have to unhook the PS3 for playback in my minimal setup. I just want to get the most out of what I've heard is a great-sounding disc. Cheers!
I don't know offhand if iTunes will apply a de-emphasis curve while ripping. I think that was only the case with older versions; I'm going to assume it won't. When you rip, you'll have the raw content from the disc, which is the audio in a pre-emphasized state. Those files will be played back as-is (without the de-emphasis curve) as there is no associated flag to indicate that PE is present. I just did a quick test with Foobar, and it doesn't appear that the flag is respected when playing back from a cue sheet either. To my knowledge, the only way to get around this is to apply the de-emphasis curve to your ripped files.
Ok thank you, so I will have to go third party software to do this? Do you recommend a program for Mac that will apply the EQ curve before I put it in iTunes?
Good question on the PS3. If you don't want to fuss with Pre the Japan TOCP 8176 contains the old mastering with the proper EQ applied. Can usually be had for around 20 bucks or so. As Lukpac stated older versions of Itunes would detect and add the EQ while ripping if the tag was found in the TOC, which that Please does. I haven't had that software installed for years, so not sure either. Try this thread- Ripping CD's with pre-emphasis on a Mac
Thank you for the suggestion, I will look for this copy to save myself some trouble. Thanks for the advice everyone!
Yamaha C-S300 can be added to the list of players that can decode pre-emphasis. I confirmed this tonight with the Black Triangle Abbey Road CD by The Beatles. Great little player for only $300. CD-S300 - Overview - Hi-Fi Components - Audio & Visual - Products - Yamaha - United States
Add the Sony CDP-XA7ES to the list. It decodes pre-emphasized CD's beautifully. Listening to Glenn Gould's Goldberg Variations on CBS/Sony 38DC-35 right now. Heavenly!
My Mcintosh MCD-301 player seems to decode them. I do not hear anything odd when I listen to the pre-emph cds I have. Or it could be my ears malfunctioning...
The DV-79AVi must be decoding them, because my C2K copy of The Wall sounds incredible. I still have yet to hear a better copy of that album, and it's one of my favorites. I just wish there was some sort of confirmation from old Pioneer Elite literature. I'm not sure I've heard what a CD with pre-emphasis sounds like in a player that can't decode it.
Switch back and forth between your analog and digital out. The difference will be more so noticeable than the DAC being used.
I tried that last night....going through the DAC of my Peachtree integrated did not sound nearly as good...pretty lifeless, in fact. However, I feel that way about anything I play in comparison to the internal DAC of the Pioneer. I absolutely love it. So, I'm not sure if the Peachtree DAC encodes it and just doesn't sound as good, or if I was listening to an example of a non decoded disc with pre-emphasis.

Thanks George, how about SUBQ tag detection for those two Yamaha's? The Onkyo DV-SP800 Does as well as the 7030-Wolfson DAC, not sure on the later re-vision
SUBQ tag detected on both. The Pre-Emphasis on Abbey road, Black Triangle, is in the subcode, right? If so, both detect pre emphasis in the subcode.
I was quite happy when I realized that my new CD-S700 handles pre-emphasis and pre-emphasis in the subcode today!
Quite a relief i'm sure. I personally want a player that can, I just want to be able to play any disc I find, used at the thrift or a forum holy grail without issues, pop it in and enjoy
Exactly. Both the AS300 and AS700 do just that, the 700 having better sound. It's more dynamic, has lower noise, dual DACs (the 300 has just one), a much better power supply, nice overall clarity and realism.
My new (used) player does. And my last player did as well. Playback Designs MPS-5 Cary Audio Design 306 SACD Pro
