I took the time to go through each of these lists, to tabulate what the consensus top albums were. I give no guarantees of this count actually being 100% accurate, but I did try.

Since most people did not put them in order of preference, there was no way to come up with a formula that gave greater weight to the albums at the top.

If a person listed more than 20, then all albums after the first 20 were ignored. If two albums by the same artist were listed - either unintentionally, or intentionally because the person felt they could not choose between two of them - only the first one was counted.

Some people posted lists to the thread more than once. Only the first list was counted.

A great many albums were listed - over 2250. However, only a relatively small number - 366 - were mentioned more than twice. Only 171 were mentioned more than 4 times.

Here's the top 20 - Who's Next "won" by a pretty large margin.

    1. Who's Next - The Who
    2. Revolver - The Beatles
    3. Sticky Fingers - Rolling Stones
    4. Abbey Road - Beatles
    5. (tie) Exile on Main Street - Rolling Stones; White Album - Beatles

    7. Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
    8. (tie) Kind of Blue - Miles Davis; London Calling - The Clash

    10. Pet Sounds - Beach Boys
    11. IV - Led Zeppelin
    12. Blood on the Tracks - Bob Dylan
    13. (tie) - Blonde on Blonde - Bob Dylan; Electric Ladyland - Jimi Hendrix; Rubber Soul - Beatles; Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd

17 (tie) Close to the Edge - Yes; The Band - The Band

19 (tie) OK Computer - Radiohead; The Doors - The Doors

Ziggy wasn't far off. But Bowie fans tended not to cluster around one or even two Bowie albums, and Bowie wasn't as popular as, say, The Beatles, which had the same effect on fans.

Ziggy, Station to Station and Low all had nearly the same amount of votes.
