I have owned this twofer for a while though never gone beyond that first listen. Some of us are clearing dealing with the curve of having too many recordings ... Milstein, Grumiaux and Szeryng are the old masters and their virtuosity lives on in their recordings!
On Spotify, "Canto Gregoriano: Misa de Septuagesima" performed by the Coro de Monjes de la Abadía San Pedro de Solesmes directed by Dom Joseph Gajard on Homokord.
Now on the turntable, record 1 of 2 from "The King's Singers' Madrigal History Tour" performed with The Consort Of Musicke on EMI. Heh, after a recent steady diet of Spotify, I put this on and am immediately slapped in the face by a good dose of 'palpable presence.'
Now on the turntable, record 5 from "Bach - Werke fur Solo-Instrumente" performed by Nathan Milstein on Archiv. Violin Sonata No. 3 BWV 1005 / Partita No. 3 BWV 1006
Not sure why. But after I played the CD version from the King's Singer Madrigals & Songs from the Renaissance box last night, the following song keeps popping up in my head ...
I have to check as this box looks very familiar and it may be one of those long-forgotten boxes on my LP shelves ...
Now on the turntable, "Bach - Toccatas BWV 913, 911, 914, 915 & 916" performed by Trevor Pinnock on Archiv.
Well worth the effort. Reference-level sound quality on these discs. (You may have the similar looking, earlier version of this wonderful edition)
I have the Pinnock's Bach Toccatas as well but do not like how the pieces are broken up into two separate LP's ...
Now on the turntable, record 2 from "Dowland - A Pilgrimes Solace 1612" performed by The Consort Of Musicke on L'Oiseau-Lyre. Featuring: (the lovely and talented) Emma Kirkby Glenda Simpson John York Skinner Martyn Hill David Thomas
Always nice to find a "Blueback" in good condition. This was issued in 1960. I couldn't find it in the Decca discography & the matrix code is unlike any I have seen, so I think this may not have originated with Decca.
I have a number of LP recordings by Jean-Francois Paillard on either Erato or MHS but nothing on RCA ...
Spotify Premium. KRUG String Sextet, Piano Quartet - CPO 555 030-2 [PRB] Classical Music Reviews: June 2018 - MusicWeb-International
Come to think of it, I have the following 4-LP RCA box. The recording was licensed from Erato to RCA. The press quality is one of the worst I have ever encountered. I ended up buying the Erato box. It looks like RCA, which is now part of Sony, will never released the recording on CD since the copyright is owned by WarnerMusic, a competitor ... The original Erato box
Erato is a French label, founded in 1953. It was distributed by RCA in the US. Warner Music acquired Erato in 1992. Warner discontinued the label in 2002, but revived it in 2013 after the acquisition of EMI Classics and Virgin Classics.
I know it's the Boston PBS TV station. Not sure about radio. *EDIT* It's public radio. They play jazz and classical along with the usual public radio programming.
