Now listening to "Beethoven - Symphonies 3 & 8" with the Columbia Symphony Orchestra from "Bruno Walter - The Edition" on Sony.
I think the versions with all repeats & slower tempos can reach 55 minutes. Up the tempos & omit the repeats & you can get it close to 40.
Playing this to cheer myself up. We are getting murdered by India in the third Test...... we have to hold out for two days, for a draw ............
Never heard the lp but bought the first (I think) cd reissue on DG Galleria. The later DG Originals cd was vastly improved in sound, also revealing some flaws on the original tapes. But quite more detailed and with better resolution.
I have Kempff's Beethoven Piano Concertos conducted by Paul Van Kempen with the BPO on the Intense Media label but not this recording ...
If you didn't catch Khatia Buniatishvili (hope the spelling is correct) with Grieg's Piano Concerto at the Proms on Saturday night I urge you to view it on iPlayer. Absolutely fantastic.
Probably thinking about those DG audio engineers. Anyway DG likely had any number of photos to put on the cover but went along with that. Trying to explain classical LP/CD covers is a rum business as they say. You can understand how Karajan and Muti would insist on control. Very few bad shots of them on the covers. Anyway I have these performances and think they are quite good.
Just returned from my 3 1/2 mile and 1 hour walk and listened to the following CD from my Bach collection ...
Joonas Kokkonen/ Jean Sibelius: Sym 3/ Tapiola. Beerglund, Finnish Radio Orch. Decca UK. An early recording from Berglund on Decca surprisingly. I got this for the Tapiola but found the Kokkonen Symphony 3 very interesting and well recorded.
Agreed. The Hammerklavier is my favourite Beethoven Piano Sonata and, although I hate it when performers are doing it, I must admit that I'm often humming along with it...
This is one of my favorite performances of the Hammerklavier. I'd listen to it now if I hadn't listened to so much Beethoven piano music this week.
1968 reissue of a Bärenreiter recording from "West Germany". Other names I recognized: violinist Suzanne Lautenbacher, trumpeter Edward H. Tarr & harpsichordist Martin Galling.
I did not know Helmut Rilling recorded for Nonesuch. BTW, it is spelled as Helmuth here but Helmut on all my other recordings ...
