Then you were taught incorrectly. Holland is not the name of the country, it's the name of two provinces, and people in the other provinces often feel offended when 'Holland' is used for their part of the country. It's like people using 'England' for non-English parts of the UK, which isn't appreciated in Scotland and Wales.
I was always a fan of this guy: Every boy I knew read and talked his exploits weekly during recess as they were that good I'd even join them to discuss his amazing comic adventures!
Malmo is an interesting city in Sweden. I wonder if BIS has a recording by the Uppsala Symphony Orchestra as well?
Here's the program from the Music City Baroque concert we attended this afternoon. Their concerts are pretty much the only ones we attend. They perform in various churches & today it was a beautiful Presbyterian Church with good acoustics. We particularly enjoyed the Telemann, played by an ensemble of 6 violins, 2 violas, 2 cellos, double bass & harpsichord. The bass soloist in the Cantata was impressive, but I wonder how a German native would have judged his diction.
Issued 1965. Producers: John McClure & Thomas Z. Shepard. I have mixed feelings about this one similar to my feelings about Verdi's 'Requiem'; some powerful music, but the operatic element doesn't sit well with me.
England players : Danny Rose, Kieran Trippier, Eric Dier, Dele Alli, Harry Kane Belgium players : Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweirald, Moussa Dembele France player : Hugo Lloris All Tottenham boys who played in the semi-finals.
I know, J.A.W. No offense is meant. We were taught incorrectly - in the early 60's, most Brits probably weren't aware of the difference. Now, it's a case of 'old habits die hard'.
I heard pianist Evgeny Kissin last night in San Francisco. He was magnificent--here's his program: Chopin Nocturne in E major, Opus 62, no.2 Chopin Nocturne in F minor, Opus 55, no.1 Schumann Piano Sonata No. 3 in F minor, Opus 14 Intermission Rachmaninoff Seven Preludes from Ten Preludes, Opus 23 Rachmaninoff Three Preludes from Thirteen Preludes, Opus 32 I was initially very disappointed to see he had changed the first half from the previously adverstised Beethoven's "Hammerklavier" Sonata to the Chopin and Schumann pieces, but he played the daylights out of them! He was called back for four encores: Schumann's "Traumerei," his own "Toccata," Chopin's "Heroic Polonaise," and Scriabin Etude Op.8 No.11. Quite an exhilarating evening!
Now listening to "Johannes Regis: Missa Ecce ancilla Domini, Missa Dum sacrum mysterium L'homme armé" performed by Schola Discantus directed by Kevin Moll on Lyrichord.
First listen to "Schumann - Fantasie Op. 17 / Etudes Symphoniques" performed by Vladimir Ashkenazy on Decca.
First listen to CD 3 from "George Szell - The Complete Columbia Album Collection" on Sony. Mozart - Symphony No. 39 with the Cleveland Orchestra. Haydn - Symphony No. 92 with the Cleveland Orchestra.
Instead of the $90 remastered LP set (or $150 used for the original release...), I opted for the $26 hi res download (24 bit/96k)--sounds great, and his playing is spectacular. The LPs probably sound a bit richer, and if I ever find them for a good price, then I'll buy them. In the meantime, I'll enjoy this iteration.
Another quality reissue from the budget Quintessence label, 1976. Recorded 1/7-8/64.Producer: Charles Gerhardt. Engineer: K. E. Wilkinson. First issued in the Reader's Digest 10-LP box 'Magical World of Melody'.
I love BG's recording of the Mozart with Munch. This live recording made 10/11/76 by the BBC is also pleasing, with the short Arnold Concerto as a nice bonus.
