I saw it on Amazon, but it's not in stock, although I wouldn't but it or any box at this point after buying the Szell box and the White Album anniversary CD and vinyl sets. If I get curious, I can check him out on Spotify.
The Graffman box went OOP a while ago, as did many other boxes mentioned in the Drake review posted by @hvbias . It's only available from private sellers, mostly at pretty steep prices.
It is unfortunate that many of those small Sony boxes go out of print quite quickly. I seem to recall being in agreement with Hank Drake who I share many tastes with, ie not an essential listen other than for pianophiles. I did hear him play Schubert's Wanderer Fantasie recently and it was mediocre.
I can just imagine what the Szell box will cost down the road. I'm glad I finally made up my mind and bought it.
First listen to CD 6 from "Vladimir Ashkenazy - Solo Piano & Chamber Recordings" on Decca. 4 Scherzi Prelude Op. 45 Bacarolle Op. 60
Columbia's LP in 1948 is generally accepted as the first altho there was an RCA experiment in the early 1930s that didn't work out very well.
First listen to CD 1 from "Beethoven: The Complete Piano Sonatas" performed by Wilhelm Kempff on DG. Recordings 1951-1956
My box is still in its shrinkwrap a few years after I bought it but I have her earlier box as well ...
It's a great set. I'm glad I bought it. Just ordered Buxtehude: Complete Organ Works by Ulrik Spang-Hanssen. A bargain set on the Documents label.
Vinyl was in use by the 30s for transcription discs. Vinyl didn't do well for home use due to the heavy pickups & steel needles used in 78 players. They were also more expensive to produce than shellac disks. In 1945 RCA Victor introduced a line of De Luxe red vinyl classical 78s. That's probably what we're looking at.
