First listen to CD 2 from "Evgeny Kissin - The Complete RCA & Sony Classical Album Collection."

    Haydn - Piano Concerto Hob.XVIII:11
    - Moscow Virtuosi led by Vladimir Spivakov
Shostakovich - Piano Concerto No. 1
    - Vassili Kan (trumpet), Moscow Virtuosi led by Vladimir Spivakov
Prokofiev - Overture on Hebrew Themes
    "
    - Moscow Virtuosi led by Vladimir Spivakov

These CDs use original album covers but they are fleshed out to full CD length with additional recordings. :)

Listened to the following CD over my daily 2-mile walk this morning. It was very hot even under the shades ...

I have owned this CD for some times. IIRC, it was quite nice and a second listen should be given ... :agree:

Honegger: Symphony No. 5; Symphony No. 3; Pacific 231

No idea if this is any good. Never heard of the composer. But it popped up on my spotify "Discover Weekly", and I liked the train. We'll see how it goes.

What's an "unorchestrated opera"? I saw that in a bio of Honegger, talking about the first thing he composed as a youth.

Would that be a broadway musical, basically?

I agree. Nice music, and beautifully recorded instruments. Nothing clangy or harsh as folks sometimes complain. :)

Honergger was a brilliant and pretty underrated composer. Two of the pieces contained in this CD are particularly noteworthy (Pacific 231 and the 3d symphony) - also check out his Pastorale d'ete.

Thanks for the tip. I am in the 3rd right now, and it's lovely. And quite a contrast from the 5th, which is all power and volume. I am enjoying both pieces so far.

  17. This was the first classical album I ever bought - still have it and still play it. Almost as good as ELP's version. :righton:

Why did you pick that one? The cover?

Or maybe you just had a deep love for "graduation" music?

Has this set been remastered? His tone could be rather thin on the older recordings.

If you want a killer recording of the 3d, you should try Karajan's celebrated account

This was probably my most recent acquisition of Karajan's recording ...
