So I went to a free recital of Bach music at Emory University in Atlanta yesterday. The program started with some Preludes (the only Prelude and Fugue was C major) from book 2 of The Well Tempered Clavier. He (Timothy Albrecht) would alternate between Piano, small Organ, and Harpsichord. For the final pieces he moved to the pipe organ. He played the opening of BWV 29, One of the Concertos after Vivaldi, a chorale prelude and finally Tocatta and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565. This was the first time I've seen giant pipe Organ playing live. Completely blew me away. If you've never experienced this I can't recommend it enough. No recording can possibly do the awesomeness of the instrument justice. The king of instruments indeed.
I have been very fortunate to see live performances in mostly Gothic and very old churches in Germany. I am not a religious person at all. ...but those were certainly spiritual experiences.
Genetics can be quite fascinating. Gedda was Swedish but his Dad was half Russian. Dylan's heritage is Russian Jewish. ...so who knows. ...maybe they did at some point have a common ancestor. ... Gedda looked different though as he aged and became more heavyset.
Listened to the following CD from my Handel collection, an all-time favorite by Emma and Chris over this morning walk/run ...
Now streaming on Spotify, "Hugo Distler: Totentanz" performed by Kammerchor Josquin des Prez on Carus.
Argo albums could always be counted on for great sound. Wish I had more in my collection. I do still have a number of open reel tapes Argo licensed to Barclay-Crocker to reproduce back in the 80's.
I always thought this portrait of Antonio Salieri looks like Kirk Douglas, but Douglas wasn't Italian, he was Issur Danielovitch.
Now on the turntable, "Mozart - Piano Concertos Nos. 21 & 19" performed by Ingrid Haebler with the London Symphony Orchestra led by Witold Rowicki on Philips Festivo.
Yeah, I hate that "Newspaper Cover" reissue series Columbia did for those great recordings. They all look alike and are just plain ugly in my opinion and it makes them look cheap. I prefer the original covers every time!
Any thoughts on it? Never heard of this before, I'm guessing this is a composer who was killed in the holocaust.
Now on the turntable, "Beethoven - Symphony No. 5" performed by the Wiener Philharmoniker led by Carlos Kleiber on DG.
