Robert Silverman - Works For Piano by Schumann, Schubert, Chopin and J.S. Bach Stereophile produced concert recording by John Atkinson and Robert Harley from 1994. This is a disc that inspired me to dig deeper into the classical music genre, particularly solo piano. I don't know where RS stands in hall of greatness but it sounds good to my ears and the sound quality is of course amazing.
Cue The Doors "Summer's Almost Gone". Summer went out blazing here with highs of 92 the past two days. That's 12 degrees above average. 90 predicted for today.
The ducks flew in formation early today making their way to winter climbs. R Rimsky-Korsakov, N. Scheherazade op.35 1967/1987 DG "Galleria" 419 063-2 cd Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra cond. Herbert von Karajan violin solo: Michel Schwalbé Normally I just grab either the HMV Concert Classics original rekkid or Classic for pleasure cd of Kletzki conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra but in the wait until that came on cd, I did get this which is really good as performance and sound go, not being overblown.
I like everything I've heard by Sallinen, including that album. I have a couple more from Naxos and some from CPO. Just checked and I have two from Odine and five from BIS as well. Plus some pieces in composer compilation albums.
I liked the music too. First time I ever heard Sallinen compositions; will definitely explore further.
Play grading this, Tchaikovsky Francesca Da Rimini and Hamlet conducted by Stokowski DCC reissue. If Everest had the same quantity of output as RCA's Living Stereo and MLP they would be revered just as highly for their recording quality.
And on that 90s RTI vinyl, no semblance of surface noise and pretty decent noise floor for vinyl after a 16.5 cleaning. I wish @Steve Hoffman could have remastered these to CD!
Now streaming on Amazon, "Peteris Vasks - Symphony 2 / Violin Concerto: Distant Light" performed by the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra and the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra on Ondine.
Now playing Two "Salzburg" Divertimenti by W.A. Mozart. Yehudi Menuhin leading The Bath Festival Orchestra. This is an Angel release from 1967. Menuhin leading the Bath Festival Orchestra, which he formed in 1959.
Can anyone recommend good vinyl versions of Montiverdi's Vespers and L'Orfeo? I'm on an HIP kick so preferably HIP. Thanks
These are the two I have (below) and recommend. Both performed by the Concentus Musicus Wien on period instruments and conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Issued on the Telefunken label.
I like Andrew Parrot on EMI but there are lots of HIP versions of the Vespers. This one on Linn should also be good and have modern sound.
DEBUSSY Preludes, Francesco Piemontesi (2015) Piemontesi has a new Mozart Concerto album (his specialty, apparently) that I want to get. Meantime, this highly rated disc of Debussy Preludes will have to suffice. Fits tonight's mood, too. Wonderful technician if not the most subtle. On Spotify.
Pēteris Vasks - Message - Riga Philharmonic Orchestra, Krišs Rusmanis conducting (Conifer Classics) Vasks is a modern Latvian composer I have been enjoying for a few decades though I only have three or four cds. Don't know much about him but read a review in the 90s that piqued my curiosity.
Wow, what a coincidence. I haven't played one of his cds in a few months and then I come here to post the first one I ever bought by him and voila. Great minds, etc......
I have those recordings on an Everest/Omega CD from the 90s. I also have 47 other CDs in that series.
