Here is the lone Clifford Curzon's recording in my entire classical music collection. Am I missing much?
For one thing, you're missing one of the all-time best performances of the Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1. Curzon and Szell on London/Decca. 1962. I'm sure it's on CD. A must-have IMHO.
Now Playing... Antal Dorati leading the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra in Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade and the London Symphony Orchestra in Valse Triste (Sibelius), Les Preludes (Liszt), and The Moldau (Smetana). Disc #6 from the third Mercury Living Presence box.
I have this opera. How do you like it so far? You should give a listen to the following version, which I have as well ...
Thanks for the tip. I will add it to the list. (see the beauty of using streaming services? ) I liked the recording I was listening to, but I had to stop it because a conference call for work. More listening later.
That's one of my favourite performances of Brahms' Piano Concerto 1. It's included in the big Curzon Decca box.
Digging through my "Early Music" collection tonight, I came up with this 2-LP set I've not played in a long time: "Music from the Armada Years." Issued by The Folio Society in 1978. Printed and made in England. [Cover art depicts Queen Elizabeth I, at Tilbury; a panel at St. Faith's Church, Gaywood] One LP features English compositions "From the time of Elizabeth I," performed by The Academy of Ancient Music, conducted by Christopher Hogwood. (This was originally issued on L'Oiseau-Lyre DSLO606.) The other LP features Spanish compositions "From the time of Philip II," performed by Hespèrion XX, led by Jordi Savall.
I need to think about that. I think I have around 10 recordings of his but it may be more. I know I have this recording which IMO is my favorite recording of Tchaikovsky's First.
I only have one, some Gershwin's recording. Bernstein, Previn and Maazel are the only native-born American conductors by whom I have a meaningful collection for each.
