Now playing the open reel edition of The Planets by Gustav Holst, as performed by the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by William Steinberg. One of my favorite recordings of this great work. DG 1971 release.
from the Karajan 1960s box set: I have gotten so much enjoyment out of this box set (this is my second time through it in chronological order). When I purchased it, I was hesitant to buy so many recordings of a controversial artist (with as many fans as detractors) but have realized that his Beethoven, Brahms and Tchaikovsky cycles from this time period are among my favorite recordings of the pieces. I don't know if this recording was remastered or not for the box set but the sound is incredible. I held off on buying the 70s box set (which appears to be going out of print)
I have to give this another shot. Found it kind of “meh” when I first heard it, at least compared to the Dutoit and Mehta I’m used to.
I agree that Dutoit and Mehta give great accounts -- they all have their strengths. Listen to the rhythmic tension that Steinberg generates with the BSO's string section opening "Mars." It's frightening!
(CD Philips "Digital Classics" German Press 446 082-2) 1996 .... recorded November 1994 @ Concertgebouw Amsterdam .... while me not being a dedicated follower of Mitsuko Uchida this co-operation with maestro Kurt Sanderling + Royal Concertgebouw Orhcestra is entirely successful ....
The original recording was already digital and subsequent release really would not be any remaster ...
While making dinner this evening, listening to Ancient Airs and Dances for Lute by Ottorino Respighi. Italian conductor Franco Ferrara leading the Rome Symphony Orchestra. Everest LP issued in 1968.
1988 reissue of recordings that originally appeared on Decca's Argo label. The Serenata is from a 5/67 session in Kingsway Hall. The others are from 10/70 in St. John's Church, Smith Square. Soloists in the Sinfonia are Alan Loveday (violin) & Stephen Shingles (viola). Producer: Michael Bremner. Engineers: A number of excellent Decca veterans.
Google changed the way it displays images a few days ago. Now, I right-click on the large preview image (the one in your post that has under it "800 x 450 - Images may be subject to copyright" and select "Copy Image Address" and then paste that into my post. Good luck.
You can now right-click the preview image and select "Open image in new tab", and then you have to open the new tab. Once you do that, you can right-click the image and select "Search Google for image" to find if there are any different sizes of it on the web. (This is another thing that's now 'missing' as a result of the recent Google change.)
