Yeah I posted this in another thread. the first classical music record I had was a kid's 78 called Flute Song by Bach. I think it was a melody taken from one of the Orchestral Suites. It was just solo flute though. Even at 5 I could tell that was a cut above the usual kid record. Until college though the only classical music I listened to was Baroque and mostly Bach.

No. Not my cup of tea really...and the new stuff is even worse. There is a few music genres I don't like and country is one of them. :yikes:

I think most music today, including what some (not me) call country, has degenerated to the point that it's hard to find much connection to the wonderful music of the past. There are, of course, exceptions. That said, I should disqualify myself from commenting on genres that arose after about 1970. For me that would include metal, prog, rap, EDM, world music, etc.

  6. Yo, does anybody know of an RPO Fritz Reiner, conducting Brahms 4th?

Someone told me there is one, but I don't think there is, on Chesky. I think maybe they saw Reiner's name on the cover, but there is also Rene Leibowitz, who conducted that one.

I mean, the guy doesn't look so good, walking into the hall with a pipe under his arm; otherwise, he's amazing!

Speaking of early classical music influences, I bought this back in the 70s. "Introspection" by Thijs van Leer (of the band Focus). I liked it a lot, and it made me want to explore further. :)

    "Pavanne"(Op. 50) (Gabriel Faure)
    "Rondo" (Rogier van Otterloo)
"Agnus Dei"(from Mass in B minor) (Johann Sebastian Bach)
    "Focus I" (Thijs van Leer)

"Erbarme Dich"(from St. Matthew Passion) (Bach)
    "Focus II" (Van Leer)
    "Introspection" (Van Otterloo)

    Letty DeJong – vocals
    Thijs Van Leer – flute
Rogier Van Otterloo - arrangements, direction

Finzi, Gerald. Cello Concerto +2 Northern Sinfonia cond. Howard Griffiths with Messres Hugh and Donohoe on cello and piano. 2001 Naxos 8.555766
Something was in the air from the late Ninetieth through Mid Twentieth century in England as a raft of composers emerged some popular some outside certain circles forgotten, all worthy of exploration.
Finzi, a Londoner, is a contemporary of Delius who I'd suggest people try and his Cello Concerto featured as the main work on this disc is one of his finest works coupled with the Eclogue for piano and strings and the Grand Fantasia and Toccata which was originally intended for a projected paino concert he sadly never completed.
Excellent playing and recording on this regular cd bought in 2002.
