Now on the turntable, "Dvorak - Symphony No. 8 Op. 88" performed by the Minnesota Orchestra led by Neville Marriner on Philips.
Brahms German Requiem is the greatest choral work for the classical period IMHO and here is my favorite version ... I also have the VHS tape for the live performance.
Now on the turntable, "Brahms - A German Requiem" performed by the Symphony Orchestra And Chorus Of The Norddeutscher Rundfunk, Hamburg and the Chorus Of The Singakademie, Hamburg led by Carl Bamberger on Nonesuch. Featuring Teresa Stich-Randall (soprano) and James Pease (baritone)
Now listening to "Shostakovich - Violin Concerto No. 1/Glazunov - Violin Concerto" performed by Nicola Benedetti with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra led by Kirill Karabits on Decca.
My number 1 as well. I have a few other renaissance composers' requiems, but I haven't listened enough to form an opinion A good one often paired with Faure's is Durufle's. Some modern ones I like a lot are Penderecki's and Schniktte's and Britten's War Requiem. Looking through my libary, I forgot about Takemitsu's Requiem which is really wonderful. I'm listening to it now.
Yes the Durufle is absolutely essential in my opinion! I have just noticed that there is a performance coming up of the Durufle and the Faure on the same evening at the Festival Hall in London, and I'm booking for sure, too good an opportunity to miss. I have this version on Argo -
I'm a huge fan of La Stravaganza, ibanez! My favourite version: Rachel Podger and Arte dei Suonatori (2003), because of Mrs. Podger's totally unrestrained passion.
What the heck, I'll give it another listen since it's right in front of me. The sealed CD is not my image.
