I like the music in this box better than the orchestral works in the other box, though they sounded pretty good too. On to my wish list
...I'm not too fond of Koechlin's orchestrations/arrangements of pieces by Debussy, Fauré, Schubert and Chabrier, though (all on disc 6 of the orchestral box I mentioned above). Liszt and others had a habit of doing that too, and it's not my cup of tea.
After listening to one of Babbitt's pupils, I thought I'd return to the teacher. Haven't listened to this in a while--whew--it's intensely contrapuntal, but not really too gratingly dissonant. Two orchestras deemed Babbitt's piece unplayable, so Schuller put together a string orchestra to prove them wrong. The live recording has some extraneous sounds, but the actual recording quality is quite good.
Wasn't Trevor Pinnock a student of the great Gustav Leonhardt? IIRC, Christopher Hogwood studied with leonhardt ...
No, Pinnock did not study with Leonhardt, though he was influenced by him. Hogwood, on the other hand, did study with Leonhardt.
Maybe I'm missing something here, but SteelyTom was referring to Charles Koechlin, not Milton Babbitt.
I could be wrong but I think everyone "missed" @SteelyTom's post Anyway speaking of newfangled, now playing Schoenberg's Piano Music by Maurizio Pollini (DG).
First listen to "Johannes Ciconia - Motets, Virelais, Ballate, Madrigals" performed by Alla Francesca and Alta on Opus 111.
I believe tonight's first tape was made from this CD set: BWV 26, 51, 56 & 147. Karl Richter directs the Münchener Bach-Chor und Orchester and a fine group of soloists. I love his Bach recordings.
Both these 1986 CDs fit on one tape. Recorded in Merton College Chapel, Oxford. Produced by Phillips & Steve C. Smith. Recorded by engineer Mike Clements, who is credited on the Palestrina CD by his pseudonym "Mr. Bear".
First listen to CD 34 from "Alfred Cortot - Anniversary Edition" on Warner. Brahms - Double Concerto with Jacques Thibaud (violin), Pablo Casals (cello) and the Orquesta Pau Casals/Cortot Chausson - Concerto for piano, violin and string quartet with Jacques Thibaud (violin)
First listen to CD 3 from "Giuseppe Tartini - Complete Violin Concertos" performed by L'Arte Dell'Arco on Dynamic. Op. 1 Nos. 9-12
