My guess is they’re thinking Western Europe. I’d put the golden age of Russian polyphony over 100 years later.

Just guessing, but to me the "the" comes across sounding like the title's author's native language is not English.

The Golden Age of the European Polyphony

I'd normally expect it to be...

The Golden Age of European Polyphony

Bruckner's 8th Symphony, especially the finale, is one of the heaviest pieces ever written.

According to the Black Sabbath dudes, the use of the scalar tritone in their eponymous album/song was inspired by hearing Mars from The Planets.

While I have the Karajan Symphony Edition box that has the Schumann 4 symphonies, I also have the following Schumann box and do not know if the symphonies are exactly the same recordings ...

Listen to Job now before going to bed, the recent release on Chandos with Andrew Davis and the Bergen Philharmonic. I do like it. Has a similar feel as Strauss tone poems.

I will have to re-listen to the Boult's version included in that Vaughan Williams box since I do not have any recollection as to how it sounds ...

It turns out that this recent 75-cent purchase was something I already had in the form of the original 2-CD issue. It's a good one. Recorded 6/89 in the Philharmonie, Berlin. Producer: David Groves. Engineer: Michael Sheady. The sound on this, while not outstanding, is much better than the Mehta conducting Strauss disc I posted recently, which was recorded at the same venue in 1990.

Job is a bit more chromatic than his earlier works. A year later, 1932, he composed the one act opera "Riders to the Sea" and it is in the same vein as "Job".

They are the same but the Symphony Edition also includes the Overture, Scherzo and finale as well as the live 1987 fourth symphony with Vienna phil. Great performances.

(CD BBC MM 230) 2003 .... recorded 1968 (Debussy) and 1970 (Ravel) @ BBC Studios London .... beautiful Debussy and benchmark Ravel "Le Tombeau De Couperin" performances by Vlado Perlemutter in his late(r) prime .... surprisingly these also soundwise excellent recordings saw only release via a BBC-Magazine "bonus CD" in 2003 - as this is offered from time to time via Ebay or Amazon platform dealers for rather little moonies this comes highly recommended ....

It's been years since I've listened to that one. He also has this BBC Magazine CD recorded in 1962 and 1970.

Enjoyable set of recordings from the early 1990's - have Silvestri's account of the Symphony on Classics For Pleasure vinyl - and what became of Collins Classics?

I see. Actually I've ordered a used copy of the cd just on EMI Eminence although there's later Classics For Pleasure reissue. I did buy his Larks Ascending and CD-EMX 2179 although I got the Boult Symphonies set.

I'm most familiar with the last three concertos but I'm finding with repeated listening of the 1st that it's one of my favorite Beethoven pieces. A good mixture of romanticism and some classical era style. This recording was great (Richter is flawless and the orchestra sound was excellent)
