Guitar music on the turntable this afternoon... I never tire of hearing the Fantasía para un gentilhombre (Fantasia for a Gentleman) by 20th century Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo. On this 1978 Deutsche Grammophon LP, the performance is helmed by two talented Spanish artists: Guitarist Narciso Yepes and conductor Garcia Navarro leading English Chamber Orchestra. Very pleasing sonics, where the guitar soloist is recorded with a proper sense of intimacy On the flip side of the LP (actually side 1), is a fine 19th century Concerto for Guitar, Op.30, by the lesser-known (to me) Italian composer, Mauro Giuliani.
I just love paying $30 to replace a CD that a CD store gave me $2 for when I thought I was burned out on the guitar! That beats the $77-179 that this CD would cost! (I opted for a $13 MP3). Both are wonderfully played and recorded.
Several years ago I bought the CD pictured below and I've thoroughly enjoyed playing it this afternoon. The packaging is rather minimalist, with no title displayed on the front. Anyone want to guess what it is?
CD 2. A London Symphony (London Philharmonic Orchestra) & A Pastoral Symphony (New Philharmonia Orchestra/Dame Margaret Price-Soprano).
Mozart's string quartettes. Complete sets and / or individual performances that are definitive. On CD. I don't mind older recordings, sometimes the older, the better. Recommendations, please?

Listening on Spotify Schubert Trout Qunitet Sonata Arpeggone Quartettsatz - Borodin Quartet/Sviatoslav Richter/Daniil Shafran/Tokyo Quartet Wonderful! What are your favorite recordings of this?
Got it, thanks. I'd get this but it doesn't show up on an amazon search. No other suggestions? Everybody watch for my Mozart thread, coming up in a few minutes.
from the Perahia Complete Analogue Recordings (1972-1979) Box set: Beautiful playing in excellent sound
Both of these sets are excellent. They cover the Haydn, Hoffmeister, and Prussian quartets (nos. 14 - 23).
(CD BBC Legends BBCL-4064) 2002 .... recorded April 1982 (Beethoven, Debussy) @ BBC Studios, Maida Vale, London and June 1959 (Ravel) @ Royal Festival Hall, London .... Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli was an verified Beethoven and Debussy expert therefore the excellent performances from 1982 don`t come as an surprise .... but the true jewel in the crown here is his performance of Ravel`s "Gaspard De La Nuit", which is excuted no less than perfectly .... btw very good sound at both occasions ....
Has anyone heard one of these Beethoven Complete boxes: https://www.discogs.com/Ludwig-van-Beethoven-Beethoven-Complete-Edition/release/8890864 86 CD Ludwig van Beethoven - Complete Masterpieces (Alle Meisterwerke - Tous Les Chefs-D'Œuvre) 60 CD Ludwig Van Beethoven - Complete Works - L'Oeuvre Intégrale - Gesamtwerk 85 CD Nice packaging, but can someone comment on the overall performance and quality within?
Very much 'at sea' today... Vaughan Williams: Serenade To Music with Sinfonia Antartica. Royal Liverpool P.O and Choir. cond Vernon Handley with Ian Tracy on organ. 1991. Emi Eminence CD EMX 2173 (UK Pressing) Bought mainly for the Serenade for Music, this is a highly enjoyable disc in Handley's cycle that also features Ian Tracy's organ playing which is always a treat captured at Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral. There was a 2002 Classics for Pleasure re-issue, this is the original with it's arresting cover art.
I have the 40 CD version of the Brilliant Classics Beethoven set. I've listened to everything so far except John Lill's piano sonatas and the Medici Quartets string quartets. I like everything I've heard so far except for the overtures, which are different performances than the 86 CD box. https://www.amazon.com/Masterworks-L-V-Beethoven/dp/B00062FLHE

Spanishy sun.... Lalo: Symphonie Espagnol. Orchestre de Paris cond Daniel Barenboim with Itzhak Perlman on violin DG 400 032-2 File under the older cds kept more for nostalgia this lp program straight to cd is an early typically none too generous example that lives more for Mr Perlman's violin playing than anything else- the brittle early digital sound in the orchestra doesn't do much for me - I just felt playing after a short stroll.
