Spiritual Jazz Vol. 8 Disc 2

This is a great compilation and disc 2 has the edge over disc 1 for me.

Waiting for the talking heads to finish jabbering then I'll be watching WC w/S. Korea vs Mexico. I thought I might get up at 4 am for the first game but I had a big night dj-ing so I needed the rest......I haven't decided who I'm cheering for yet but probably Mexico.

I was going to say that’s my favorite of hers but I think I also said that about her album with Clifford Brown. But now I’m thinking so what they are both my favorite record by her. I can live with that.

I assume you know the earlier piano less quartet recordings with certain Chesney H. Baker? If not they are essential listens.

Does the mastering on this one better the original Atlantic cd I have read such good things about?

Gosh. . . how does one pick a favorite Helen Merrill LP? There are so many great ones, decade after decade. . . .

I don’t have any cd version of that record so I cannot say. This is based on the hi res files from the much lauded 1993 cd box but I don’t have that to compare. I Can say it was cut from those files specifically for vinyl format and the sound is really quite good. Comparable to the recent Atlantic vinyl box and I think it was done by the same team. It’s not at MM levels but many many levels higher then the usual garbage that passes for a new vinyl reissue these days.

    Saturday after lunch.
45 min alone with my coffee and my jazz.
That time of the week where I can set the volume higher than usual. And this time I've decided to set it even higher, and the results were amazing - I was hearing sounds I never heard before, some effects and a clear birds sound coming from the left speaker.
Man, I was proud of the system, the CD, the moment.... I need to put the volume higher more times.
Then the music was over but the birds sound continued. They were just outside very close to my window. Man, I felt so stupid

So for now - worldcup - Sweden/ Germany.
    After that, this one:

That one will sound amazing as always, and I guess the birds were asking for it.

I have both but I haven’t actually compared them. I don’t often compare items of the same format because I don’t have the patience for switching them back and forth. Not that I do it that often either but I do more frequently compare items on different formats (vinyl and optical disc) since I can put them both on at the same time and just switch inputs on the AVR.

I too was waiting to congratulate Lonson and other thread folks on reaching 1,000 pages of conversation!

    thou·sand
    ˈTHouz(ə)nd/
    number
    1. the number equivalent to the product of a hundred and ten; 1,000.
      "a thousand meters"
      synonyms: informalgrand, K, thou
"I'll give you four thousand for the lot"
      • the numbers from one thousand to 9,999.
        plural noun: thousands
"the cost of repairs could be in the thousands"
      • informal
        an unspecified large number.
        plural noun: thousands
"you'll meet thousands of girls before you find the one you like"

    Usage notes
Unlike cardinal numerals up to ninety-nine, the word thousand is a noun like dozen and needs a determiner to function as a numeral.

    • a thousand men / one thousand men / the thousand men
    • compare a dozen men / one dozen men / the dozen men
    • compare ten men / the ten men
Thousand can be used also in plurals. It doesn't take -s when preceded by a determiner.

    • two thousand men / some thousand men
    • thousands of men / hundreds of thousands of men
    Synonyms
    Derived terms

I think it’s perfectly fine for that to be the case. I usually have at least double the amount of items in any list into which I’m trying to shoehorn (a top 5 with 10 or more items? Sure, why not!).

So this dropped onto the doormat this morning from AUM - great service as I only ordered it last Sunday. A very well put together 3CD box of Parker's songs with many different vocalists.

Of all the myriad “meets” records this one has to be one of most empathtic and symbiotic
    Real communication between them here

    True.

But everyone was empathetic with Ben Webster. There would be something wrong with a person who did not feel great empathy when Ben played.

I imagine that even Coleman Hawkins, the fiercely competitive player, after he first encountered Ben Webster in an after-hours cutting session, decided he would no longer attempt to follow Ben Webster, and always went first.

His eyes were too full of tears for him to see the stage.

This shows Benny Carter and Chu Berry standing between Ben and Hawk

    In the classic "middle years"

In their late years. Hawk left us in 1969, Ben in 1973.

In honour of this thread hitting 1000 I went back to look at the 15 pages. So Rob since you are still with us am I correct in saying the 10 to 20% is a little higher. My listening habits have definitely moved to almost all jazz in the last few years.
Though I often go through phases and I’ll never stop listening to other music forms...

Still probably in that range although edging up toward the top range, but it really varies and I will go heavier into jazz at times. Lots of knowledge and friendly talk around hear, as well as lots of inspiration for personal new directions in jazz, so I’m in for the long haul even if often as just a lurker.
