This is perhaps the most mesmerizing album that I've heard in the last several weeks, if not all of 2018. His playing is so deep and so soulful, perhaps more so then on any other album I own of his(and I own a lot of them).
Does anyone have an extra nice vinyl copy of "Crystal Silence" or "Jewel in the Lotus"? I'm-a-lookin! http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/ecm-vinyl.763918/
Yes and yes. The sticker states mastered from the original analogue tapes, so whatever echo was already used on the original soundtrack (disc 1) is reproduced on this release. Disc 2 without the echo also sounds wonderful. The CD booklet has liner notes by both Franck Bergerot and Ashley Kahn as stated on the sticker. Looking at a photo on Discogs, however, the accompanying 3LP release only has liner notes by Franck Bergerot. Miles Davis - Ascenseur Pour L'Échafaud
Look at Fremers site as he just posted about the new ECM catalogue that includes a number of AAA archival recording reissues including crystal Silence.
My first cup of coffee had Kenny Dorham Quiet Kenny on the second cup I've got Johnny Griffin The Little Giant both JVC XRCD
Take some time to listen to Mobley's Soft Impressions from Straight No Filter. Lineup is Mobley, Morgan, Tyner, Cranshaw & Higgins, all greats - but this song highlights some wonderful piano playing from Tyner. Just amazing, the accents he puts on this tune elevates it to the stratosphere - and this is with a killer head to boot.
Keith Jarrett and Charlie Haden - Last Dance (ECM) I'm still a little sad that Charlie is gone but glad he made so many recordings in his last decade. He lives on through his art.
I just took my only copy of Crystal Silence (and a bunch of other stuff) to the local church/thrift store for donation. It was a little beat, but someone might get some use out of it. They sell records very cheaply there. The news of a good reissue seems like the best way to replace it.
Today disc 2 as I do tasks to prepare for my friend arriving from Texas tomorrow. . . . Andrew Hill "Solo" Mosaic Select
NP "Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section" Art Pepper - alto saxophone Red Garland - piano Paul Chambers - bass Philly Joe Jones - drums
Miles Davis - Ascenseur Pour L'Échafaud [/QUOTE] I have the 1988 Fontana CD with 26 tracks. Is this an improvement?
I couldn't say. I have never heard the 1988 Fontana CD. I first bought the Criterion DVD twelve years ago and only later a Japanese CD which is not as good as this new French release.
NP "Blue Mitchell - Out Of The Blue" Blue Mitchell - trumpet Benny Golson - tenor saxophone Wynton Kelly (tracks 1-6), Cedar Walton (track 7) - piano Paul Chambers (tracks 2 & 5-7), Sam Jones (tracks 1, 3 & 4) - bass Art Blakey - drums
WP Charles Lloyd - Jump The Creek (ECM) NP Elmo Hope - Here's Hope! (Celebrity Records) W/Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones. Listening to this made me think if Red Garland hadn't been available Elmo would have been a good replacement in Miles first great quintet. Of course that doesn'tmean Miles would agree with me.
Flora Purim "Stories to Tell" Beat Goes Public cd (sounds better than the OJC cd). I love this one. . .
I'd be inclined to say that On The Corner is one of the most divisive albums in history. Either you get it or you don't. Obviously it is not going to everybody's cup of tea, which is a fair cop. Given my wife's reaction to some of Miles' other fusion albums like Agharta I could imagine her either fleeing the room or asking me to put on something else if I ever dared playing On The Corner in her presence. I can hear her now: "This is noise, not music!"
