I'm in the same frame of mind Lon. I avoid putting my head in the sand but try to limit my news to meaningful news to limit my outrage. There's so much I don't have control over which is best left alone.... NP Miles - Sketches Of Spain (Sony/Columbia) '97 reissued cd I decided to listen to this cd to help me critique a Decware tube buffer I have my player running through to see if I want to buy it.
Of course, my decision was to read the news. Talking heads can be far too repetitive. At least in the papers, there is a recognition that there is more than one person on earth.
WP Kenny Clarke - Bohemia After Dark (Savoy) SHM SACD This disc sounds amazing to me. Cannonball takes a great solo on Willow Weep For Me. I was frozen for that moment listening to him and nothing else.
NP Keith Jarrett Trio -Live at the Blue Note Complete Disc three. That opening of Autumn Leaves is mesmerizing as it is beautiful.
Listening to this right now and it sounds great... Not many albums can hold my attention for three hours, but this one is doing the job tonight.

It is interesting that the success of the rock group Creedence Clearwater Revival made it possible for Saul Zaentz to buy up a series of jazz labels (Prestige, Riverside, Milestone, Pablo) and establish a policy of reissuing nearly everything, and also kick off the concept of completist jazz box sets. Though when Zaentz was in his 80's, he sold the jazz empire to Concord, who quickly dismantled that idea of keeping nearly everything in print. A rock group had much to do with the renaissance of jazz reissues.
I'm working every day on the large number of unplayed LPs in my basement, most of which are classical and cost me $1 or less. My jazz LP collection is pretty small, since they are usually a lot more expensive. I did come across this & played it tonight. Some of it is too New-Age-ish for me, but other tracks are tasty. Everybody plays multiple instruments. Recorded at Vanguard's 23d St. Studio, NYC, 7/73. Produced by Oregon. Engineer: Jeff Zaraya. I saw these guys as part of The Paul Winter Consort before they formed their own group.
I know I'm not alone in this... I spend a lot of time going and coming from work. I usually take some CDs to my car. Like the sound, but it's not the same... In the office I use my Spotify subscription. The sound is good, and I love to hear those details only available thru headphones, but it's not the same... I'm home only at night and, with wife and kids, I can only play my jazz at late hours... thru headphones. It's all quiet at that time and my headphones are nice, but it's not the same... So these 45 minutes that I have to myself Saturday/Sunday after lunch are priceless. I can put my jazz thru the speakers and let it breath. But I always felt too much anxiety when the moment of album selection came. There I was - could play anything, but what ?! So now I choose the album during the week. Some sound or even comment on this thread helps me decide. So, planned, for long, for this afternoon: John Coltrane and Eric Dolphy will play at the Vanguard and in my house. Jazz will breath ... loudly, finally.
Van Morrison, The Philosopher's Stone, disc two on a Sun morning with a cup of Seattle's Best coffee today.
Well when i have such existential dielemas ( and I do ) my daughter usually shakes her head scornfully and says “Dad ( sigh) #firstworldproblems” Clearly she is too young to understand the enormity of the problem. ....
So many share your situation. I am lucky in that (1) my wife enjoys a wide range of music, (2) her hearing is not so good, so louder volumes are OK, and (3) I built a very well insulated, though small listening space for late at night. I never can enjoy the physical constraints of headphones, so rarely use them. I could never listen to music at work (now I am retired), not because of any office rule, but because I cannot listen to music as a background. It requires my full attention.
Heres a 70s 2fer i really like. Combines Studio Blues and Blues for 9 strings ( both orig recorded on Prestigue in ‘61 )
Wow! I'm in the middle of the greatest B&W romance film ever, even as I sit here posting. This is great stuff, great recording too.
I'm so glad I have that one. The huge boxy jewel case, and it's got some great stuff on it. Seattles Best, coffee which I find much better than Starbucks. I just got through playing some Van an hour or so ago.
