Having never heard any Bobo Stenson I can finally check him out now that ECM recordings are available to stream. Bob Stenson - Indicum
This one again because I like the music and also how it sounds on the system today. Gary Crosby's Nu Troop "Migrations"
This is the third of the three Perry leader dates I found, and it sounds great. All three are trios. Sacha Perry "Not Brand X"
!!!! they were cool !!!! Well, you know Cannonball for sure, the cool guy on the left. His brother (at his right) was shorter, didn't have the same charisma and let's be honest not the same amount of talent. Even his instrument is less cool (cornet... is that a trumpet for kids?). But let me tell you that I do like this short chubby cornettist. Even played this next album twice today. Please, Do look back on Nat Adderley, he's one of the cool guys.
I would say the best place to start with Bobo Stenson would be as a sideman on Charles Lloyd - Canto and Jan Garabarek - Whichi-Tai-To. They are also classics and top 20 all time ECM list candidates. Then I would try War Orphans as I can hear the influences in the playing with more recent piano players.
Went out to see Becca last night at the World Cafe Live in Philadelphia, excellent show. NP: Becca Stevens Band - Perfect Animal (2xLP)
I'm curious as to why one should begin with Stenson's sideman work? I love those titles but find his trios more satisfying when I want to really hear him.
Cornets may be even cooler than trumpets. Just saying. They can sound so lovely! My best friend has several trumpets and several cornets. . . the cornets have a beautiful sound.
I'd say some of the best brass players around today are cornetists e.g. Rob Mazurek, Taylor Ho Bynum, Josh Berman.
This lp defines lyricism. This one always lifts me up and that was much needed after a lousy Monday Marty Paich Quartet w Art Pepper alto Marty on piano Frank Capp drums Buddy Clark bass I think it was recorded around the same time as the recent RSD pepper lp The Art Pepper Quartet.
Harder to steal the show if your the main act? To start with maybe wasn't correct but because I focus on piano players so much in jazz ensembles that I appreciate the sessions where they not only have great solo’s but make the session sound better to the point that I feel the album wouldn’t be as good without them. See: Bill Evans - KOB, Chick Corea - Sweet Rain, Herbie Hancock - Sorcerer, Stefano Bollani - Easy Living (Enrico Rava). Thinking out loud it’s hard to say if it was better that I discovered Herbie Hancock via ESP instead of Taking Off or Eric Dolphy via Chalres Mingus 64 Europe recordings instead of going directly to Out To Lunch but it’s an interesting topic.
I get it. He does make an impression on those albums no doubt. These days I play his trio albums more than those others you mentioned. Probably because I'm choosing by leaders as opposed to band members. All though now that I think about it, when I play those albums I'm frequently listening to Bobo.
Chocolate barley, eh? Well, as a bonafide chocolate junkie that changes matters considerably! Only one of my issues with Guinness...no offense to my relatives back in the auld country. IMO obviously jazz isn't for everybody's tastes but Kind Of Blue is definitely less of an acquired taste than Bitches Brew.
FYI, chocolate malt is barley that is roasted the same amount as chocolate seeds are. So it doesn’t really taste like chocolate, it’s just not roasted to the point it tastes burnt.
