Note that the rise in record albums with sexy covers coincided precisely with the start-up of Playboy Magazine. It seems certain to me that once Playboy broke the taboo and had their magazine on nearly all news stands, the record companies rushed to follow suite.
went on a vinyl search (and to beat the heat). Came home w/ a couple. Couldn't say no to this minty (<1976) Chicago II.
NP Tommy Flanagan - Let's (Enja) Plays the music of Thad Jones A trio recording and one of my favorite TF albums.
Purchased the Impulse 1961-1974 25CD Box Set last week. I previously only had a handful of these albums, so seemed like a great deal.
Finally got round to giving the debut Jaco Pastorius record and Pat Metheny's Big Size Life a listen. What can I say?! They're both excellent!
NP Charlie Haden - Montreal Jazz Festival 1989 w/Don Cherry and Ed Blackwell (Verve) So grateful for the festival for doing this and recording the concerts.
I'm still not a big fan of the title track, but I am gaining more of an appreciation for the rest of the album. Very dense music.
I have to say, listening to this pressing for the second time tonight, this is easily the most profoundly improved recording I have heard on vinyl so far. I've only been collecting/spinning records for about 2 months now, but ~200 albums later I am hooked. I've always listened to lossless 16/44.1 with a smattering of 24/96, but the sonic texture and overall sense of realism of especially AAA vinyl has just blown me away. Having attended dozens of acoustic concerts, the sound of instruments with analogue playback is just more like the real thing, and this record is a perfect example. For the first time it feels like I'm hearing this music live, because the instruments just sound right. Chamber's bass finally sounds like an actual upright bass, with the sharp attack of each pluck followed by a long, complimentary decay. You can hear the bass's strings separately from the acoustic chamber's sympathetic tones. It's just glorious.
Finally found this one at a reasonable price. I have a hard time paying a "normal CD price" for these radio broadcasts. And this one is a double CD. I know the sound won't be at the same level as Agartha or Pangaea. But it's always great to hear that 1975 Japan tour.
NP Bill Evans Trio - Another Time:The Halvorsum Concert (Resonance) cd Waking up with Bill..... Yesterday while reading I listened to both volumes of his solo work Orrin Keepnews made with him on Milestone and was reminded how great they are, especially considering how little planning went in to making them.
That image of the all-important liner notes for Julie London's Calendar Girl disappeared, so here is an attempt with another source
I've been listening to a bit of Ray Anderson today, especially Old Bottles New Wine with Kenny Barron, been really enjoying it. I think this is fab: Yes the album is somewhat chaotic bordering on the crazy - the last track Wine could almost be a muppets tune away from the subject area, but I think these are great takes on standards. Guess you have to be in that frame of mind. What do people think of this guy?
Rhiannon Giddens "Tomorrow is my Turn" . . . . I love this album, but it is mastered with so much bass energy that my Monoblocks distort at just above a low volume! Too bad.
This Coltrane disc was right next to the last so I'm playing it. John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman, Impulse UHQCD from Japan
Salena Jones. "Salena Sings Jobim with the Jobims" . . . sublime Antonio lives life's frevo Antonio prays for truth Antonio says our friendship Is a hundred-proof The vulture that circles Rio Hangs in this L. A. One of the few things I have from my grandfather. He brought it from the US, where he worked for some years. I've just played with my kids. Wonderful to take them away from TV and the android-tablets. Now they're gone to bed. I'm not in the mood for that 70s live Miles I bought today... So I'll play this "adult" soundtrack. To follow @Tribute's theme from some previous posts. Gato was inspired here
I do love that Gato Barbieri soundtrack! If not for that children's game, maybe our world today would be better.
