You got me thinking more about Ten Years After, they really had a shot at being big but never really made it. Thought maybe because the blues based bands didn't age well like Savoy Brown , Free, etc at least by popularity. But the a Stones were blues based too. Hell, they had a key spot in the Woodstock movie, etc. Should be more popular today.

Saw them in Bristol, England in May 69 - 3 months before Woodstock! My first ever gig at age 15. Top of the bill were Jethro Tull with Mick Abrahams.
Undead's my favourite, captures that early spirit.

Looks like I'll need to pick up more than a couple albums to get a good picture of their work. Right on.

For the uninitiated, "A Space in Time" is a good place to start, after that I'd pick up "Shhh" and "Cricklewood Green", those go really well together.

You might try Anthology 1967-1971 a good 2 cd compilation if you don't want to buy all the albums. http://www.allmusic.com/album/the-anthology-1967-1971-hip-o-mw0000220713

This is also a pretty good deal, Think About The Times: The Chrysalis Years 1969-1972
    http://www.allmusic.com/album/think-about-the-times-the-chrysalis-years-1969-1972-mw0002026710

It contains the lps Ssssh, Cricklewood Green, Watt, A Space In Time and Rock & Roll Music To The World. It omits Recorded Live and Positive Vibrations.

I recently acquired ASIT. I like it more now than I did back in the day. Good stuff.

Good list. This is closer to what I would pick than the list they had. I would probably add their version of Spoonful or I Can't Keep From Crying Sometimes.

I've got "Ssssh" on LP and have yet to listen to it. Will do so immediately. Picked it up after digging their first LP ("I Can't Keep from Crying" is just so cool) and "A Space in Time" on LP. Also have "Watt" and the album cover looks like an acid trip.

Seems to me "Cricklewood" is essential. What's the best digital version of this?

Don't know about digital but they released a remastered import version of Cricklewood Green a few years ago with some unissued bonus tracks on it.

There is also an import remastered version of A Space In Time with the quad mix as a bonus that is pretty cool and sounds different than the regular version.

My favorite is Undead. I love the blues/jazz vibe and their ability to stretch out on a song without going overboard, and not too much of Alvin Lee's hyper guitar (my personal preference).

Hard to believe this disc was first released in 2001. What took them so long?

From what I understand, Alvin wasn't as much into putting out the vault stuff and Ric Lee was the one who is pushing for the vault releases. Maybe now that Alvin is gone more vault stuff will come out. There is more live stuff in the vaults. The complete Woodstock and Isle Of Wight among other shows. There are also complete shows that were recorded for the Recorded Live album. They also have not released their BBC sessions officially. I don't know about more studio outtakes.

I am not sure if their set from the 1970 Atlanta Pop Festival was recorded or not. I believe there is also a Winterland concert from 1975 that exists as well.

I'm going to step out there and say that I like the Positive Vibrations album. :hide: Granted it is not as good as their earlier albums, I still think it is decent. Many will probably say this is when they started to fade, but it is still worth checking out - IMO.

Ten Years After did a killer version of Spoonful!
