Live Aid coming to DVD

  1. I was over at a friend's place most of the day during Live Aid. Howard was one of the first people I knew who had a satellite dish. We dialed around and found a raw BBC feed, so we were able to watch most of Wembly live. Up here in Canada, Much Music was running the that crappy indie feed out of the U.S. that was just a compilation of various performances, most not live.

In 1995, Much Music replayed the complete concert to the day, or the weekend it originally ran. Unfortunately my wife (now ex) wouldn't let me near the TV or VCR that day, as we were preparing for our first open house/house warming party. Very happy to hear it will be released on DVD soon, as up to now I was still cursing her once in a while for not letting me tape the concert that day. My original tapes are a dub of a dub of an EP/SLP tape, very poor quality. My favourite performances of the day were mostly the Wembly stuff, Ultravox, U2, Queen, Bowie. Prince's acoustic video of "For The Tears In Your Eyes" was another highlight for me.

    Well, it's about bloody time!!

Wall-to-wall music is what I always remember -- what an awesome concert. I lived in Tucson, Ariz., at the time and had to get up real early to catch the opening act. So I turned the TV on, sporting a killer hangover, and there's Ozzy Osbourne reunited w/Black Sabbath!

My main memory was, having spent most of the day hanging towards the back, watching the screens more than anything, and trying to stay hydrated, I finally borrowed a friend's binoculars. I looked towards the stage, and got my first in the flesh look at Mick Jagger. He was actually there, it wasn't an image on TV or on the radio. It was the first time I've ever associated the word "human" with the guy, he always seemed like a hologram or something like that. Same reaction a few minutes later with Dylan.

I was at the Philly show. Looking forward to the DVD. Among many things, I remember the crowd exploding for the Zep reunion and 90,000 people waving their arms back and forth in unison to David Ruffin & Eddie Kendricks.

Other than snippets of the performances on news shows, etc., I've never seen any of the footage. And to this day, other than what was shown on the big screens at JFK that day, I've never seen any of the Wembley show...period.

Bittersweet time in my life. I remember it way too well.

The most annoying thing was the announcers... the second most annoying thing was the constant flip-flop from Philadelphia to Wembley once the U.S. show started.

    Lots of other assorted memories:
-- Phil Collins taking the Concorde so he could play with Genesis in England and then sit in with Led Zeppelin in the U.S.
-- The mike cutting out on Paul McCartney
-- Tina Turner and Mick Jagger's way hot duet! Yowsah!
-- The Hooters, Philadelphia's hottest band, got to be one of the first acts to appear at JFK Stadium, and Bill Graham's reply when asked if they could appear: "Who the f*** are they??"
-- Also in Philly, if I remember, some unsigned local singer actually appeared first
-- In 1986, there was a kind of snack food called Quaker Granola Dipps that inserted cardboard records inside specially marked packages. One of these was called "Live Aid," and it was basically the story of the concert in four minutes. Several short clips of music from the concert also appeared on the record.

I was living in South Bend, Indiana in the basement of a house; each room except the common rooms were rented out to different people separately. A hundred and ten bucks a month and I still had a hard time affording it. One of my housemates had cable, and he knew I was a big music fan, so he left his MTV on all day so I could pop in and out watching things. I also found a radio station that had picked up the MTV feed.

Two days later, I was taking my first-ever plane trip, on a DC-10 from O'Hare to Philadelphia International Airport. I had received an urgent phone call. "Come home now! Your brother is dying!" I knew he was sick, but I had no idea HOW sick; it had largely been kept from me. One of my sisters made the plane reservation; a friend who just happened to be going to Chicago that day drove me to O'Hare from South Bend; I packed so lightly and so hurriedly that I forgot to pack underwear... The next morning, I got to see him one last time before he left. He died on July 16, 1985, eight days short of his 22nd birthday.

As you can see, a bittersweet time in my life.

I'd hope that any DVD kept the two gigs separate, so you could watch either Wembley or Philadelphia as if you were really there and not have to go through "Meanwhile, back at the ranch..." syndrome as you did if you were watching on TV that day. And no bloody announcers please!

Plus, the two videos done for broadcast that were not part of Live Aid itself -- the Prince number and the Bowie/Jagger "Dancing in the Street" -- should definitely be separate from the concerts.

I believe Phil Collins played some of his solo stuff at Wembley then came over to Philly for the Led Zep set. He's a helluva drummer but that Concorde stunt seemed a bit much....

Don't forget Tony Thompson drumming with Zep at Live Aid. He seemed rehearsed, Phil did not.

The night before Live Aid Robert Plant was playing live at the Joe Loius Arena in Detroit and the big buzz around town was that Zep was gonna reunite in Detroit to practice for the next day. So my buddies and I went anticipating this great reunion. But it never happened.

I just talked to my friend that I went to Live Aid with and he reminded me about the moment in that show that put it in it's place. David Bowie introduced a video and the music was The Cars "Drive". The images of those starving and dying children brought Wembley to tears. Did they show that video on TV???

Didn't Phil Collins sing "Against All Odds" in London and Philadelphia both?

I seem to recall Collins doing a solo version of "In the Air Tonight" at JFK. If memory serves me, the crowd went "da-dum, da-dum, da-dum, da-dum, dum-dum" where the drum break was supposed to be. Quite amusing at the time.

Collins played with Clapton as well...Collins had produced his then current album Behind The Sun.

Hearing Clapton open with "White Room" was quite a thrill. I don't think he'd played it solo previously.

I would buy it, especially if it had the Bowie performance. For some reason, with all of the live Bowie that has been released in various audio/video formats, I don't think anyone has ever released a legit recording of Bowie doing the "fast" arrangement of TVC15 that he was doing back then.

I remember some folks criticizing McCartney's choice of "Let it Be" saying the song was antithetical to the purpose of the event. It struck me as funny that teenage me was able to grasp the concept of dichotomy ("Let it Be" can mean "Leave it alone/do nothing", but it can also mean "Let it come to pass/Let it exist") better than professional journalists and commentators.

The Who were badly served by their keyboard player. They didn't use a tape or sequencer on "Love Reign O'er Me", and the live keyboard player was only playing the upper and lower notes on the arpeggios. They also hadn't played together for a couple of years at that point, IIRC. Roger Daltrey acquitted himself fairly well despite it all.

    Regards,

If you recall, the power went out in the middle of the first or second song of The Who's set, that couldn't have helped any momentum they were trying to build for their performance. I don't think they really wanted to be there, but how could they say "no"?

I taped it on VHS (in mono, SLP). The quality is about as good as I can expect from that time period (the VHS tapes are much heavier, better stock) using my Dad's top-loading Panasonic Omnivision (remember the Reggie Jackson ads: "Omnivision? No, Reggie-vision" :) ).

I have about 9-hours of the broadcast. Most of the daytime broadcast from Wembley and Philadelphia was shown on MuchMusic, here in Canada (I'll have to check if long-haired J.D. Roberts was vee-jaying that day; he, of course, is now known as the mostly-graying John Roberts on CBS News). The problems started when ABC began broadcasting and MuchMusic stopped. Truncated performances galore. No Zeppelin doing Whole Lotta Love or Madonna doing Into The Groove ("I ain't gonna take **** off today", in reponse to the recent Playboy and Penthouse releases).

I've been meaning to transfer this tape to perhaps several DVD+RW's (along with the 1988 "Mandela: Freedom At 70" concert from Wembley, of which I have the whole concert). I guess I'll wait to see if the ENTIRE concert (or even anything close to it) is being released.

Favourite memory: the reunited Black Sabbath with a "Fat Elvis" Ozzy stalking around the stage, with his gut _literally_ hanging out (he was shirtless, I think). I was also able to purchase a nice large coffee-table style book in the late eighties with some great colour photography from the shows (with performance times etc). Sade looked most delicious :righton: .

    Mike,
This is not entirely correct. I taped MuchMusic's 1995 broadcast hoping to finally have a nice hi-fi stereo copy of the show. It actually ran about 8 hours (including commercials). However, it did include some performances that were neither included on MuchMusic or ABC back in 1985.

This will especially be bittersweet, as they have both passed on (Ruffin quite sadly in a Philly crackhouse).

this concert also had the comment from Bob Dylan which I belive prompted the whole Farm Aid concerts. He said something like: It might be nice if you could take a tiny bit of that money and give it to the farmers who are loosing their farms.

...which was probably the most coherent thing to come out of Mr. Dylan's mouth that day, if I recall correctly :)

I am going to have to break down and buy a DVD player. I haven't seen any Live Aid footage since that day. I remember going nuts when Led Zep reunited - it was the height of my high-school Zeppelin obsession. I would like to see the U2 performance as well - I missed it the first time around. Then there's Mick Jagger and Tina Turner - Justin and Janet can't hold a candle to those two.

On the subject of resurrected concert video on DVD I'm wondering whatever happened to the Bob Dylan NYC anniversary concert from 1992?

As far as I know it was issued on a VHS set by Sony shortly after but never made it to DVD for some reason. Why wouldn't Sony be interested in a DVD release?

Sony probably is interested but Bob and his crew make all final decisions on what comes out. According to Dylan author Tim Riley, Bob imposed some strict camera rules before the show (no closeups) and also wasn't pleased about having to re-record some vocal parts for the CD/Video release (My Back Pages).

I'm sure it will be out on DVD one of these years. Clapton, Neil and George really cook in this show!

I have the Dylan thing on LD, and it is worth it just for the NY "All Along the Watchtower". Sounds like NY wrote it. Of course, the rest of the stuff is great too. I wondered why there was no DVD.

But what about NO NUKES on DVD?
