It’s played a lot on radio but I like the studio version better. I hate the spoken intro. “I want you... to want ME” lol

I wish i could agree with you but that is the most inconsistent track on Free Live. The famous Free rhythmic ensemble is not in the pocket! Much of this due to Koss' guitar cutting out here and there, i believe in part due to being tackled by an excited female fan.

Great catch! The solos near the end really take the song to a new level.

Haven't gone back to read the entire thread, but the two that instantly popped into my head were "Summertime Blues" by the Who and "Do You Feel Like We Do" by Peter Frampton (even though I prefer the studio version)

bob seger - turn the page - it helps that studio version has never ever been on a CD anywhere in the world.

It's hard to say that Sympathy for the Devil on Ya-Ya's is definitive because the arrangement is different and the original so iconic, but man it's damn special, especially the dueling guitar solos.

I'll say this and the original are both definitive.

    For me:
"What Goes On", "Pale Blue Eyes" "Sweet Jane", "White Light/White Heat" , "Rock & Roll", "Ocean" and "Lisa Says" on the Velvet Underground Complete Matrix Tapes are definitive.

For me it would be Inside Looking Out from the Grand Funk Railroad Live album. The studio version is good, but the live version is great!

When I was a DJ this was always a staple to get the girls (or ladies in their 40s :)) going. And you could catch a break to get a drink or take a long leak, too. :D

I agree the Frampton Comes Alive album.

    A few others that come to mind;
Whipping Post - Allman Bros Band Live at Fillmore East
Daydream - Robin Trower Live (1975)
No Quarter - Led Zeppelin TSRS Live
Boom boom out go the lights - Pat Travers Live

Perhaps you are referring to the better version on the Songs Of Yesterday Box Set?
A strong improvement but definitive is an enormous call i would not put to a vote.

In some cases, like with "Rock 'n' Roll All Night" and "No Woman, No Cry" the live version was the original hit, so it didn't replace the studio track.

Here in Sweden, where the Kiss song was not a hit either way, they always play the studio version (which I think sounds like an rushed and unfinished arrangement, which they corrected in concert), since there is no such connection with the live one.

Whenever anyone plays the studio version of the Marley I just assume they made a mistake and didn't know any better, because it is so very different (sounds like a demo with that drum machine).

Actually it was the B-side to ”Woman In Tokyo”, the ”Smoke...” single had live and studio versions of the same song. ”Black Night” was always very chaotic and ramshackle live, as it often was the encore after the ”Space Truckin’” workout, they were exhausted and eveything was out of tune, so they just thrashed their way through it, especially Blackmore just making as much noise as possible - nothing wrong with that. :)

Fun fact: that track was actually an old outtake from the same Lyceum shows as the Live! album, they no longer played that song live.
