What a great catch! If someone asks about the essence of live rock and roll, THAT is definitely a contender (and the whistle at the end really brings the song home!)

    Hello,

I've been fortunate that all of my favorite bands can deliver-the-goods in the live arena, & show-off where a "sterile", though perfect(?) studio album can breathe some air & come to life.

There's not really a lot to say about a band when they can't deliver in the live arena, so for myself, the live version nearly always becomes the definitive version.

*Studio albums = A representation of how a band would like their "work" represented as best as possible.

*Live albums = A person-to-person delivery of their craft from a concert. They will either uplift the studio effort, or....

Too many bands & albums to list here sorry, ciao,

    Gregster

I absolutely love The Allman Brothers Band, no secret. A lot of their live tracks qualify for this thread. Two that don’t, by my interpretation of this thread, are the aforementioned “One Way Out” and “Statesboro Blues.” Not because the well-known live versions aren’t brilliant - they are, for sure - but in the case of “One Way Out,” that live version from Eat A Peach is the only vintage released version. In the case of “Statesboro Blues,” there was a studio version recorded “back in the day,” but it was never released until about 1989. The live versions of those tracks were the default versions... by default.

"Maybe I'm Amazed" - Faces (their live version from Long Player as compared to their studio version - leaving McCartney out of this)
"Summertime Blues" - The Who (from Leeds)
"Crossroads" - Cream (but then again, I'm not familiar with a studio version)
"Endless Highway" - The Band (from Before the Flood)
"Alcohol" - The Kinks (from Everybody's In Showbiz)
"Got to Get Better In A Little While" - Derek and the Dominoes (from In Concert)

just this week I bought Seger's Back IN '72 on CD.

It's on Lost Diamonds label from 2008 in Argentina.
It has the full LP with studio Turn the Page.
( it also has 4 bonus tracks- Persecution Smith, Chain Smokin", Lookin'Back and Heavy Music Pt 2.)
Sound quality is decent and I believe this release is legit.

Regardless, the live TTP is superior.

    Good one.

I was going to say Priest's live version of Green Manalishi (not counting Fleetwood Mac's original version, just JP).

I agree, it's much better than the version on Natty Dread. Same is true of "Lively Up Yourself".

Is this the album otherwise known as "Songs From the South"? I have this; I've never heard any other version, so I'd be interested to know what was changed, if anything.

I find it interesting that on every clip I have seen of Kelly performing "How to Make Gravy", there is one line that is different from the original studio version, and I'd like to know why he felt the need to change it. On the original, Mary's boyfriend had "just a little too much cologne", but in later renditions he always sings "he never did dig Nina Simone".

Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac - Rattlesnake Shake, Oh Well, Green Manalishi all from the Live in Boston 1970 set. I also love Lindsey Buckingham's live rendition of Oh Well from the Live 1980 album that gets played on the radio often.

The Kettle Whistle version of "Jane Says" by Jane's Addiction. As far as I know, it's the only fully live official version.

Iron Maiden has so many that are better live, like Hallowed Be Thy Name & 22 Acacia Avenue, that the studio versions sound plodding and dull by comparison. I rarely listen to studio versions of those.

The live version was the first one officially released-- by at least a decade-- and it's the best and definitive version.
