No. I've always thought it should have been done that way, but a mono redbook CD is two-channel mono.
Thin Lizzy - Dedication 76:39 - that one stands out because my previous CD player did like it at all, I have tons of CDR's at the near 80 minute limit.
I had to look up this thread after reading the following comment at the SuperDeluxeEdition blog... apparently CDs now can hold 89 minutes of music??? Most of the posts in this thread mention CDs at 81 or 82 minutes, at most. Anyone have anything longer? (Note, the comment in question is about an upcoming Alphaville 2CD compilation.) CD 1 is 85:10 and CD 2 is 85:57 which I was amazed at. Apparently you can get 89 minutes on a CD these days but big labels won’t do this because technically it doesn’t conform to ‘red book’ standards. There is a chance that very old CD players might have issues but according to Piet they’ve been doing this with their so80s comps for 7 years without a single complaint. http://www.superdeluxeedition.com/news/soeighties-presents-alphaville/#more-31539
I don't own any CD's over 80 minutes. The two longest for me are The Ultimate Luther Vandross and Grateful Dead Europe '72 (Disc 1). Each disc is 79:58.
Only Nr. 5 in my collection (after Bäst of Die Ärzte (89:45/89:42) and so80s prsents Alphaville (85:09/85:53).
The reissue of Wintercoast by UK proggers Touchstone clocks in 1t 84.12. Certainly the longest I own, and plays without any issues. Philip
"...now"? A German 2-CD Best-Of compilation from Die Ärzte has 89 minutes on each disc, and it was issued in 2006 – by Universal!
This is the longest regular pressed CD I own: http://www.discogs.com/Necrony-Poserslaughter-Classics-Remasters/release/3132147 Total running time: 89:57
The first CD I bought (in the 80s) that clocked in at 80+ minutes was Dvorak: Stabat Mater in the Pilz Vienna Master Series and that was a budget label. It's a beautiful piece of music that I'm sure can be found in the clearance bins for a $1 or less now.
I know a lot of no limit CDs from the late 1990s Magic - Sky's the limit 81:06 Mia X - Mama Drama 82:42 Skull Duggery - unissued the solo collection 84:40 Kane and Abel - am I my brothers keeper 82:14 Magic - first album 92:45 But I hear there's longer CDs
Alanis Morissette - Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie - 1hr 11min Debbie Gibson - Anything is Possible - 1hr 13min Blondie - Live (Livid) - 1hr 15min Janet Jackson - janet. - 1hr 15min Janet Jackson - The Velvet Rope - 1hr 15min Lil' Kim - The Naked Truth - 1hr 15min Lil' Kim - Notorious K.I.M. - 1hr 17min Janet Jackson - Design of a Decade (EU) - 1hr 17min -- Huey Lewis & The News - Greatest Hits - 1hr 19min Joe Jackson - Steppin' Out - The A&M Years - 1hr 19min It's interesting how bloated albums got in the 1990s thanks to the rise of the CD. The Naked Truth by Kim is probably a bit longer than 1:17, as my copy was ripped from my vinyl and I wasn't precious about cutting fades properly.
The Bear Family Herman's Hermits 5oth Anniversary set. Disc 1 is 87 minutes, disc 2 is 84 minutes. I've heard some folks have trouble ripping or playing it.
I had fun querying my database too. Here's what I came up with starting at 79:30 and longer. Like others have mentioned, some of my older cd players also have trouble playing many of the longer discs. The recent Philips Classic box set has at least 12 discs (out of the 50) over 80 minutes. The longest 86:30..I prefer discs that I can play entirely between bathroom breaks...but still pretty cool..
According to Wiki the Aerosmith cd goes for 79:22 and my Japanese version with a slightly altered tracklist also clocks in at 79 minutes......
