On Friday, Impulse! will announce the June 29 release of “Both Directions at Once: The Lost Album,” a full set of material recorded by the quartet on a single day in March 1963, then eventually stashed away and lost. The family of Coltrane’s first wife, Juanita Naima Coltrane, recently discovered his personal copy of the recordings, which she had saved, and brought it to the label’s attention.

I must have a few hundred hours of John Coltrane. Always nice to have the chance to get a bit more !

  3. If that sample which is playing on that linked website is from the album, it sounds pretty good. I prefer his Tenor playing over Soprano, but this will be an interesting release.

I'd be interested in the story of how this got "lost". That linked article gives no clue. They recorded the sessions and...did Impulse! say no? Did Coltrane decide he didn't want it out? Something else?

I'm not a huge fan of his released 1963 recordings, but the glorious My Favorite Things from Newport suggests that he was reigning himself in a bit (in the studio). Hopefully this goes a little more in the 64 (or 61) direction!

I don't see the LP on Amazon, is Pledge Music the only seller with that format?

And yes, I have ordered from them before without hassle

It’s there. I saw it earlier. No cover art shown yet. Do not have a link in front of me.

You're right -- thanks Mazzy and Beatnic_Daddyo7- I did a specific search when the 'other formats' failed to find it, and it came up. It's ordered.

This article says: "Inexplicably, the session got shelved, then overlooked, and eventually, as the years passed, completely lost."

Yeah, I don't take "inexplicably" as an answer. I doubt Impulse! said to Coltrane at the time: "Inexplicably, we're not going to release these sessions, so we're shelving them..." I'd like to know why.
