Unless of course, Plant was in love with his car and called it baby! Picturing the love affair 'tween old Robert and a 57 Chevy would be a trip,no?!!?

One of the many awesome Half Man Half Biscuit song titles. Surely worthy of its own thread?

True, the word "friend" pops up in the lyrics...but it's so lush and melodic, it doesn't really resonate as a "buddy" song. I'm thinkin' there's some love there. ;)

Agreed. A corpse can be defined as 'it', but when you look at it that way it doesn't fit the OP's definition of 'things', I suppose.

My interpretation is that she was boasting of her sexual prowess.

Well, what d'ya know...yet another "I have more knowledge of the origins of this song than the person who wrote it" post.

It's never been a question of what "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" is "about," but rather, where the title came from.

The wink-wink/nudge-nudge gives you a warm glow, I'm sure. But the fact of the matter is that Julian's drawing does exist, and not only John but others around him attest that it is the origin of this song title.

Was "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" as a whole influenced by and reflective of what was going on at the time it was written and recorded? Undoubtedly it was.

But do you honestly think John Lennon would stoop to such a level of corniness that he would purposely create a song just so he could sneak the initials LSD in the title?

On the contrary, this is one of the most heartfelt and beautiful love songs ever written.

The race that's spoken of is merely a plot element; the real story is the deep love, devotion and level of support Brian's girl gives him so willingly, no matter what the circumstance.

    Towers of London
    when they had built you
did you watch over the men who fell
    Towers of London
    when they had built you
Victoria's gem found in somebody's hell

Pavements of gold leading to the underground
Grenadier Guardsmen walking pretty ladies around
fog is the sweat of the never never navvies who pound
spikes in the rails to their very own heaven

Bridges of muscles spanning so long and high
merchants from Stepney walking pretty ladies by
rain is the tears of the never never navvies who cry
for the bridge that doesn't go
    in the direction of Dublin

And I've seen it in a painting
and I've seen it in engraving
and I've seen it in their faces
clear as children's chalk lines on the paving

    Towers of London
    la la Londinium.

Seems more like a lament for all of those who died constructing the tower, or those who died imprisoned there.

HA! I knew this was coming. (IOW, "well whaddaya know, another overreaction to a Beatles-related post".)

No warm glow - I really don't care either way. Regardless of the title's origins, the subject matter is still in keeping with the thread so I'll stand by the song being on the list.

In keeping with the XTC theme:

Statue of Liberty - don't think there's any double meaning there, just an ode to the SoL as if she were a real person.
