Interesting news. Yet, she somewhat lost me with "West" and its successor. Somehow, I couldn't get into either of those, but "Essence" is just amazing. Which album of hers after "World Without Tears" would you recommend to me?

I want good pressings on vinyl!
When I hear a masterpiece like "World Without Tears" on cd and I marvel at the musicians and songs it makes me sad Lost Highway is doing these....
On this forum I read about Doors definitive vinyl rereleases about every three months, yet the true masterpieces of our day and age are pressed on below standard editions!

Dave Sutton and I did albums together for years, in fact we did one a couple years ago. I know he's been really happy with Lucinda, and I'm glad he's finally been getting his due, after the great string of albums they've been doing. I see her sort of as a female Neil Young, very good band vibe, some great songs. She's gotta lot of heart in her songs and albums.

Awesome. I thought Blessed was a return to form after a few good-but-not-great LP's.

I have the "Little Honey" RBCD and enjoy Lucinda Williams vocals, but the SQ on that album is loud and compressed. Perhaps this album was an anomilee since I don't have any of her other albums, but I wish more artists would really listen to their CD's on a good audio system before releasing them. A well recorded and mastered RBCD is not as good as high resolution, but they are capable of sounding very good.

This was mentioned in the thread on what 2014 releases folks are looking forward to, but a new Lucinda Williams double album with 20 songs (!) deserves its own thread. To be self-released in September, there's a decent write up at the No Depression site:
    http://www.nodepression.com/profile...s-album-where-the-spirit-meets-the-bone-to-be

    Good players too:
Bill Frisell is on some of these tracks. Tony Joe White and Ian McLagan are on the record, as well as Pete Thomas (drums) and Davey Faragaher (bass). Rounding out the recording is Wallflowers guitarist Stuart Mathis, who has been touring with Lucinda since at least last September, and longtime bandmates Butch Norton and David Sutton. Jakob Dylan does a duet with Lucinda on "It's Gonna Rain."

Track list is reported to be:

    Disc One

    Compassion
    Protection
    Burning Bridges
    East Side Of Town
    West Memphis
    Cold Day In Hell
    Foolishness
    Wrong Number
    Stand Right By Each Other
    It’s Gonna Rain

    Disc Two

    Something Wicked This Way Comes
    Big Mess
When I Look At The World
    Walk On
Temporary Nature (Of Any Precious Thing)
    Everything But The Truth
    This Old Heartache
    Stowaway In Your Heart
    One More Day
    Magnolia

I had no idea that LW contributed a song to the Lone Ranger soundtrack! Nice... great title.

I've heard her sing "Something Wicked This Way Comes" in concert sometime in the last few years, but other than that, am not familiar with these titles. Of course, I guess most folks know the J.J. Cale cover "Magnolia", which is a fairly perfect song for her to cover.

So glad Greg Leisz is involved in this! Best floating festival I've ever been to had him playing with about fifteen of the acts and here are some pictures I did of it:

In a press release issued this afternoon, Lucinda Williams confirmed what she has been saying from the stage for the past several months: the new album, Down Where the Spirit Meets the Bone, will released on September 30 on her own label Highway 20 Records, in conjunction with Thirty Tigers. It will be a double CD set and perhaps a triple (or quadruple?) LP set. It will be her first album since the 2011 Blessed. Her groundbreaking 1988 Rough Trade album was re-released in a special edition package earlier this year.
The tracks included on the new album were recorded late 2013 and early 2014 with about half being rock oriented and the other half country flavored. A substantial number of tracks -- enough for another record -- were recorded with Bill Frisell. During the recording, it was anticipated that it would be a double album or two separate albums, as Tom Overby said they both were very pleased with the results. In other words, no filler. However, last month Tom said in a note that it would be definitely be the former and the tracks recorded with Frisell would be released as a separate album, early in 2015.

But the press release indicates that Frisell is on some of these tracks. Tony Joe White and Ian McLagan are on the record, as well as Pete Thomas (drums) and Davey Faragaher (bass) (both from Elvis Costello's band). Rounding out the recording is Wallflowers guitarist Stuart Mathis, who has been touring with Lucinda since at least last September, and longtime bandmates Butch Norton and David Sutton. Jakob Dylan does a duet with Lucinda on "It's Gonna Rain." The album was produced by Tom, Lucinda, and Greg Leisz.

Lucinda wrote 18 of the 20 songs, with "Compassion" beginning its life as a poem by Miller Williams, her father, the poet, with Lucinda providing the music and additional lyrics. The press release further states: “This is a personal milestone for Williams as it marks the first time she has composed music for one of her father’s poems, and it is from that song that the album title was taken." However, Lucinda's longtime fans will recall father and daughter have "collaborated" before. The last time being in March 2000 at the International Poetry Forum in Pittsburgh that featured Miller Williams reading his poetry and alternating with Lucinda and guitarist Bo Ramsey performing her songs. It was a memorable evening: "Poetry Written, Poetry Sung."

The album also features a cover of JJ Cale’s "Magnolia."

at least album cover looks cool

but 20 songs? unless she speeds things up nobody will make it to the end!

i'm also a much bigger fan of artists cutting entire albums with the same band and not having guests left and right...that hardly EVER works...
