I HAVE AN AMP/PRE-AMP set of Luxman, purchased around 1982. The amp is 100w/ch. They are a matching pair, and I think both have "100" as the numerical part of the model #.

(My brother has these right now, but ins't using them.)

My question: Are these considered good/vintage equipment and what is the probable value in good working order?

I paid, as I recall, $1,000 for the set in a nice retail boutique in Knoxville,TN.

    Any bkgrnd would be appreciated.

    Dave,
Thnx for the link. This one's a good bit different from what I have.

Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure the model numbers are LX-100 and MX-100, matching amp and pre-amp.

The look was pretty distinctive on the pre-amp because it had 3 large, square acrylic buttons across the face that would light up red when engaged. Don't remember what they all did, but one was a phono direct.

    Anyway, thanks again.

Wow. That Luxman is sure beautiful!

Not to digress too much about the original question, but Doug, can you recall whether your Luxman can handle 2 ohm speakers? I remember owning a Luxman amp some 15-20 years ago, and being impressed about the "30W @ 8 Ohm, 60W @ 4 Ohm, 100W @ 2 Ohm" rating. I have never found another receiver rated at full RMS power at 2 Ohms.

Trying to revive my memory banks from those days, I *believe* that the Luxman was close to the HK 825 pre and HK 870 amp in quality.

A cut above the Pioneer and Technics amps, receivers, etc. in its day.

It should be a very nice sounding solid state system where they has a philosophy of "sound quality over specifications". In other words, the THD would be .02% and sound great while other stuff would have a THD of .00025% and sound sterile.

(THD: Total Harmonic Distortion, one of the measurements used widely in those days. Heck, they still could be using that measurement for all I know! It's been quite a while since I was stereo shopping!)

Definitely. My old Luxman was replaced by a newer H/K amp. I always thought I downgraded when I sold it - and I bought it back. That's what good equipment does to you

Yes, Fjhuerta, HK went downhill (IMO) after I picked up my separates!

"Where they has a philosophy"????

    Had! HAD! HAD! HAD!

This is not my fault. Ever notice how close the "s" is to the "d" on the keyboard? A conspiracy, I tell you! Conspiracy!

THANKS for the input, guys. I had always felt that (maybe) I was dumb ever to hand the stuff down to a 17-yr old kid who basically dumped it because it didn't have a remote(!).

He passed it on to his future brother in law who wants to use it for techno-deejaying!

It wasn't built for that kind of rough and tumble use in the first place, so I'll prob play "bad guy" and get it back.

My brother's a good kid, and in his defense I never said I MAY want this stuff back some day.
