I threw a party a few weeks ago and unknown to me one of my guests placed a small glass candle (the holder) on top of the sub. I noticed that the heat from the candle (which burned out) caused a small burn in the black lacquer bead finish (almost the shape of the candle holder). It doesn't look like the wood beneath was touched, just some of the finish singed off. Is there a way to apply a bit of finish to this spot to make this less noticeable (kind of blend in). Any good process to follow (touch up with a sponge?/sand a little?/etc.) and what type of paint (?) is used for these finishes? I contacted M&K and they said that they don't make their cabinets and only suggested I replace the whole thing (I think that will cost too much for vanity). Any ideas??

    Thanks,
    Todd

Todd, this may sound strange, but you might want to stop by a local auto body repair shop and ask how much they might want to fix that. They spray laquer all day. It might not be too expensive.

That sounds like a good idea. It's such a small little marking on the top but it does look obvious when light reflects on the finish. I'm just wondering if there's a method of simple restoration I can do at home that doesn't cost too much?? Sadly, I'm pretty lacking in this kind of craftsmanship knowledge. If a wire needed replacing or something else electrical then I would have a pretty good idea of what to do.

I'm not talented in that area either. But I feel it's like a scratch on a car - you can do it yourself but it will still show up (off colour paint, the shine will be different, etc.) The whole area has to be done - professionally. :(

I guess flipping the sub over (bottom side up) is not an option?

Covering it with a picture? I can send you my picture. I've heard it helps people to diet.... inspiration, no doubt. Not horror, as some of my detractors claim. :D

Put the candle holder back on the sub? :D

Sorry to be so flippant but I really feel it has to be professionally done. I know how you feel. That happened to me with a speaker.

Try a furniture restorer. Or just speak with one and see what they say. They may have some ideas. Maybe there is some kind of polish that may help. My greatest fear is that it'll look worse....

    Good luck. :)

I should put your picture on it Gary!! :) It's just funny how these things happen. I've taken should good care of the sub. It's survived two moves without a scratch and then 1 stupid candle later. I have a little coaster sitting over the scortch. I know I'm really being anal about this but it's kind of like I've really made it a point to try and take care of my gear because when I was younger I was very careless with things. At least it wasn't the finish on the Meadowlark Herons!! Also, I'm not sure which guest make this mistake but to me I hold no grudges. Accidents happen (Lord knows I've made some goofs). Thankfully no one spilled a drink on the tube equipment or decided to play a record with a pizza pie. Gosh, nev er drink too much when you're hosting a party in your own swinging pad. My wife used to be pretty good at noticing when drinks and other things were put down in "not such a good idea" places. Everything's a new learning curve being single again...

    Gentlemen...

I was, about a decade ago, an auto/industrial spray painter.

Todd, the only way to make your sub look new again is to have professional do it. They would have to redo the whole panel that the mark is on and because it's most likely laquer, it won't be cheap, believe me I've done laquer on show cars, it's not easy. Multiple layers of painting, drying, and polishing, and one tiny, tiny mistake means you have to strip it down to the base coat and start all over.

Check out some furniture refinishing places and pray it's not real laquer!;)

Thanks, Dave. I think I may have to go with Gary's picture (oh, the horror). Someone suggested this on AA:

"Try sanding the mark out with some 600 grit sandpaper. Wipe the area with a damp rag to remove any sanding dust. Let the surface dry completely. Use a good quality , but very small, paintbrush and Minwax black laquer paint to repaint the area. Minwax has its polyurethane gloss in the paint. You should be able to fix it with 1 or 2 coats.
    mg16"

Maybe I can do this so at least the slight scortch marks/ripples are not as obvious?? Damn, candles (too bad I like them too much)...

You can give it a try I suppose. Just a bit of info for you though...Black is the absolute hardest colour to make perfect.;)

Don't worry, Todd. I can get an 8X10 done.

Frankly, if I was in your shoes, I'd just leave it. I know from experience that I'd probably make it worse. It will REALLY stand out. Then you'll be kicking yourself instead of your guests.

You may have better luck restoring it, though.

The biggest I can get is a 24X32, so that should be about your limit. :D

M&K sent me an e-mail saying they would replace the cabinet for $188 and install the gear if I ship it. You know what, Gary send me that picture...
