Perhaps this funtion is only available on certain types of MACS?

I asked above if maybe I configured XLD improperly but I didn't get a response from anyone.

Is there a setting that ensures that peak values are included in the log?

To confirm if two Cds have the same mastering.

In the "CD Rip" tab in Preferences, check the last option, "Scan ReplayGain". It will give you both ReplayGain values and a peak level (in dB) in the log.

Perhaps it's just me, but I certainly wouldn't use that as the be all/end all on the subject. Of course if said values are very different, that's one thing - but if they're close, obviously better to judge by other means (such as RMS).

In all the threads that I have seen that compare the peak values, there has always been a significant enough difference to suggest different masterings. But then I have only been here a year. :)

You're welcome. Sorry I missed your question in your earlier post. Too excited, maybe. :D

    I can fully understand.

I am now trying to rip again using the setting you recommended. (Fingers crossed)

My Superdrive crapped out after about a year. Luckily, I have the Apple Care Plan and they were able to fix it and get it back to me in about a week. With that being said, I've considered doing some heavy ripping and would use my old PC as a workhorse and then transfer the files over. No sense putting that kind of strain on the Superdrive.

You're much better off using an external drive and not the cheap internals Apple commonly provides with their computers. If you buy an external, at least you have some control over the brand and enclosure, plus you can easily swap it out if it goes bad. It's a total pain to open up most Macs (especially laptops) and replace the optical drive. The external need not cost you more than $30-$40, if you shop around.

That having been said: I prefer using dBPowerAmp for secure ripping under Windows, because to me it's just less trouble than anything else I can do on the Mac. XLD has a weird, cryptic interface, I think due partly to the fact that the software is written in Asia, and partly because it's freeware. dBPowerAmp is a much more sophisticated piece of software -- no muss, no fuss.

well so far so good. I've done 6 cd's all have ripped without fault. but now I've been stuck on this for 1 1/2 hours. the disk is in pristine condition, not a mark or scratch on it

Could be one, could be both. Try a different CD/DVD-ROM drive and see if that changes anything.

Maybe on a Quad Core - def. not on a G4 Single Core Mini Mac.
Biggest trouble is not the time comsumption, but the huge files involved. More than 1 GB every time ! If you are often on the brink of a full HD this is a major letdown.

if I had another drive I would!

I gave up on the cd, tried another pressing of the same album (the Misanthropy version) and it went through no problems. that disk probably has a few light marks, so go figure.

Shouldn't be. Even if you're ripping WAV files, you shouldn't wind up with more than 800 megs of material -- well under 1 GB.

You should always, always rip only to an external hard drive. To me, it's much too much wear and tear to use the internal boot drive. Always keep data files on an external drive. Drives are really cheap nowadays -- we're talking $50 for a 500GB name-brand drive. Trust me, this will make backups and replacements much easier.

XLD is fairly slow on my iMac, but it does a really great job. i've ripped scratched discs (mostly cheap flea market finds) successfully with XLD that wouldn't rip with other apps, like Max.

Can you explain the track gain and ripped (confidence5)good or bad?. I noticed on the previous post examples the confidence was 14. What are the purposes of the track gain and the ripped confidence as to the how well it performed? I'm new at this. I'm ripping these as aiff files. I notice the other samples were flacs. Are they any better as far as sound. I'm just archiving my cds to burn to other cds for in the home and car. Just want to make sure I get a EAC cd.

the 'confidence' grading is simply down to the data base of cd's burnt with XLD. same with EAC..... there's a data base of cd's that have ripped well, it's not indicative of the cd your using. the more cd's ripped with XLD will mean the higher the confidence (proportionately speaking)
