    Scan ReplayGain?

XLD rocks my world!!! Is the "EAC" of Mac OS world, an amazing application!

But I want to know what is exactly the role of "Scan ReplayGain" in CD Rip option:
    - Does this affect the sound in some way?
    - Does it writes something in the tracks extracted or only in the log?

    Tranks for any help :righton:

    Regards

Having the replaygain information itself embedded in the files has no more effect on the quality of the sound than does having the track name, artist info, etc. in the tag. It can only effect the sound quality if the software used to playback the file has replaygain playback option turned on.

I typically don’t use replaygain for playback, but I do like to have the info in the tags so that I have a quick shortcut to volume information about that track - i.e., how loud is the file? For me, this is very useful information when making compilations.

As a Mac user I'm liking the look of XLD but I have a couple of questions for anyone familiar with the program. Below is a log file of Houses of the Holy.

    1. I don't see any ISRC codes (or am I blind?)
    2. I assume the catalog number does not show up
    3. Is track gain an average level, RMS for instance?

I've another question about the Flac format and it's merits as opposed to .wav but I think I'll save that for a fresh thread. :)

    Thanks.

Yea, I am still trying to sort out the album/track gain and peak readings myself...when I look at waveforms those data points don't jive with what I'm looking at...or at least not what I think I should be looking at.

    .90923 in XLD = 90.9% in EAC

I haven't exactly figured out how EAC rounds their numbers, though.

Thanks George. So that much is clear.

It would be nice to see the ISRC codes ... maybe there's a preference setting somewhere.

Before I started using XLD I used Max and kept running into files Max wouldn't convert. XLD was able to convert all the files Max couldn't. And yes it can convert FLAC directly to Apple Lossless. XLD is constantly being updated too, which is a good sign IMO.

    1. Many discs, if not most older discs, do not have ISRC codes in the disc TOC. And not all drives can read all content in the TOC.

    2. See answer to question no. 1

    3. Well, it’s similar. I believe that ReplayGain claims to use something like a psychoacoustic model, which is probably just code for loudness contour. And it also references a preset preferred loudness level, indicated as 0.0. So that a trackgain value of -7.0 is 7dB’s higher than the reference level of 0.

Ah, that helps explain what I am seeing...thanks!

I posted this on the Music forum in regards to the '96 and '07 remasters of Hawkwind's Space Ritual album...is it odd that the track gain and peak levels don't correlate? Meaning, one goes up and one goes down (for the most part) when comparing the two.

I notice it uses CDParanoia for ripping. A number of Mac programs do. My personal favorite is xAct.

I'm going to bump this up to see if anyone knows how to get XLD to display ISRC codes in its log file.

Ok, XLD has been updated at the weekend and it is now supposed to display ISRC codes. But I guess you have to tell it show them in preferences, like all the other stuff it can display in the log file (%n &a etc). Would anyone hazard a guess as to what might be the command to display the codes?

Once I get this going the only thing I'll hope for in a future update will be the ability to display catalog number.

  18. I have been using XLD to do this for a while because sometimes hi-res FLAC files don't play correctly on my Mac--either too slow or with a lot of static hissing pumping to the music. A quick conversion to ALAC fixing everything! :)

I gave Max the flick ages ago. for the 9 million file types it claims to be able to convert, it only ever had a 30% success rate when I used it.

xACT for FLAC decoding and XLD for everything else.

  20. New XLD update tonight.

Why use xACT for FLAC decoding when XLD does it?

just download that and hit 'software update'. the updates are only 7MB

xACT is a faster/simpler interface. you can drag and drop files into xACT.

    3 steps: open xACT>drag and drop>hit decode

    job done
