Mac Users: Anybody Try XLD for secure ripping?

  1. On XLD, it's three steps as well:

    1) open XLD
    2) go to "open" in the file menu
    3) select the files you want to open in the file open pane

*Poof* they are converted to ALAC. You have to have ALAC selected in XLD's preferences before you do this--the default, I believe, is AIFF.

I think that xACT has a pretty crummy interface. Ugly and clumsy looking. I got rid of it a long time ago. XLD does everything xACT does and much more.

open XLD>drag and drop to the icon in the Dock>hit decode

  3. XLD 20100518 is currently the newest version available. To get it, use the "check for updates" menu option in XLD and XLD will update itself.

  4. Excellent! I need to use the Dock more to do stuff like this.

    Log file from latest version

Here's a log file from today's update if anyone cares to see it. It's now showing some extra info such as composer, ISRC if there is any and MCM (whatever that is). Also showing disc ID which is nice.

Thanks - but...that's exactly two more steps than what I do with XLD.

I drag the files to the XLD icon in my Dock. Flac/Ape or whatever files are automatically decoded, and properly tagged and put in the same folder as the originals.

    The end.

One thing I wish XLD would do: Max would create a new folder, properly titled, automatically - if set in preferences - for the new files if you wished. XLD does not have this option in pref's.

the default is whatever the preference was during the previous session. and changing those preferences is quicker with xACT. I prefer it's interface. as far as encoding goes, it's all there, all the options in front of you. XLD is drop-down-menu city. it's great for bit-accurate rips and log files, but it's a bit more fiddly to configure than xACT. as I said, I use both programs.

    Attached Files:

  9. No, you can specify the codec in the preferences window. If you fail to specify anything, the default choice is AIFF. I know this is the default because the first time I ran the program, AIFF was selected and I changed it to ALAC. I haven't touched the preferences window since.

I have my preferences set so that audio files are automatically converted to ALAC. There's no fiddling with any settings, etc. You just open your files and XLD automatically converts them, period.

  10. Exactly. Using xACT to do this is more complicated than using XLD, not less complicated.

  11. No problem!

you've only changed the preferences once, that's why the default setting was AIFF and now it's ALAC. I get it.

if you use XLD for converting multiple formats, multiple times.... (which I do) you'll find that "the default output file is whatever the preference was during the previous session". my original point was it's easier to chop and change between those multiple formats with xACT, due to it's easy to use interface. if you're only using XLD for decoding FLAC to ALAC and nothing else, fine.

  13. I'm using it for that and for making CD images.

Don't get me wrong, I occasionally use utilities other than XLD for certain things that either XLD doesn't do or that I don't know how to use it to do--for example, I still use CUE/WAV Extract for some CUE/WAV sets and I still use Toast and iTunes for some ripping--but XLD has allowed me to remove Max and xACT from my system.

  14. OK, we were both talking circles around each other, neither really understanding each other's point. I get it now!

Yikes, this is what a bunch of songs ripped by XLD look like when imported back into iTunes (see post below). I'd hate to have to edit every title to tidy my complete collection up!

By the way Mr Moderator, I don't mind if you delete my lengthy log file above ... I should have just pasted in a couple of song examples, not the whole album.

Why not just rip them in iTunes?

Btw, pic is too small to see the tags.

  18. It is true that if you rip discs to iTunes and choose the "use error correction" option, you will probably get a bit-perfect rip. However, iTunes doesn't generate a report to confirm that a rip was bit-perfect. Some people want this confirmation, so they use another utility such as XLD, xACT, or EAC.

Sorry about the small picture. Here's one that hopefully large enough. Note the amount of information that's displayed after ripping tracks in XLD. I would have thought that that info should have gone into the appropriate column in iTunes. Hopefully I find a way to make that happen.

As far as using XLD over iTunes for ripping is concerned, I want the detail that XLD gives in its log file. Peak level for instance is very cool. I am also in the process, the very early stage I will admit, of tranfering my complete collection to wavs on a hardrive. What's very cool is that I'm able to rip the same cd in Apple lossless at the same time.

Can you highlight files from more than one folder and have XLD put them where they are supposed to go (sort of like a drag and drop batch processor)?

  22. Yes, XLD will save converted files in the same files as the original files. There is a preference setting for this.

Bumping this thread - hopefully someone can help. I'm using the latest version of XLD [Version 20100711 (120.5)].

I am trying to rip a new, pristine CD, and during the 'test before copy' XLD freezes at 34.3% (always the same place), the remaining time goes up to infinity, and it will never finish. However, when I go in and uncheck "Rip as accurate as possible (CD Paranoia Mode)", it rips fine (it likely doesn't matter, but it happens to be a LONG track - 20:05 - the first track on CD1 of "The Complete Bitches Brew Sessions" set).

I expect these kinds of shenanigans with scratched, etc. CD's, but this CD appears to be pristine (also rips fine with Max using 'cdparanoia' and iTunes). This seems to happen about once every 25 or so CD's I rip, and I really like XLD's log/cue files (am an EAC convert now solely using a Mac).

Any suggestions? Maybe an XLD bug of sorts?

I use XLD on my MacBook Pro, but extensively used dbPoweramp on an old PC on a recent massive ripping project. Both pretty much do the same thing, although XLD is easier to configure (and is free). The key difference in functionality is that with XLD, you never really know what is truly going on with a rip until it's over in terms of errors, fixes, etc. With dbPoweramp, you can literally see how many errors are being fixed as it counts down.

Sometime discs would hang on dbPoweramp and I'd move them over the XLD and between the two of them I was able to accurately rip a few problem discs. But as you said, the most pristine discs have issues, whereas ones that are a complete eyesore rip the most accurately. From what I can guess is that some of these discs either a) are poorly manufactured or b) have deteriorated. That's the only thing that makes sense. In some cases, the very first track or a few of the outer tracks are a problem and I'm guessing they were replicated poorly, although some have suggested that is a sign of a dying optical drive. I'd recommend checking the C2 Error Pointers feature and try and rip again. At least if XLD fixes the track, you'll be able to see how many - if any - errors were there.

What could also be happening is that your disc doesn't match anything in the database, so XLD continues to re-rip the it until it gets it right. With a disc as common as that, I would imagine that there are plenty of discs that match it. Try ripping a burned copy of a CD. You'll be there all night....

One thing I can't figure out is how your rips in XLD get added into the AccurateRip database. dbPoweramp would upload them every 30 days, but I'd hate to think that the mass number of XLD rips wouldn't be included.
