I hope he's appalled at the sound quality of the music and makes them fix it.

    Macca and cheese?

It must be depressing to watch that in memory of John and George...

I did, but I don't know him that well, so just I call him Paul; or "mate".

I love Macca, but does anyone really believe that he has not watched this movie since 1964??? Kinda silly, really....

I think it's cool. It has to be weird being so much older and watching that.

It would have been nice if they had a more in-depth interview with him about it.

Hey, there's that hair again! :D

I don't believe that. I would believe that he hasn't watched Broadstreet since 84 though.

If he was watching a restored print with the original mono track, which was part of the Paul Rutan restoration that they have yet to make available on home video, then he wouldn't know that there was anything wrong with the sound.

Well, I think they played it in theaters with the fake 5.1 songs during the "Miramax" re-release, so there were some pretty bad screenings recently, too. The important thing is that the original track is preserved in as close to its original form and level of quality as was possible in 1996. That means there will at least be a chance that future screenings and home video releases will not sound like dog poop. :)

Incidentally, I didn't see any indication of a "new" international DVD release. It seems that the UK at least, got the same version we got, at the same time we got it.

Funny that Miramax wouldn't do a re-promotion to coincide with the 40th anniversary, though. I haven't seen any mention, other than the screening McCartney attended, here in the US.

It was a special screening that Macca arranged himself, privately. It is definitely hard to believe that he hasn't watched it in 40 years, but not impossible to believe.

Funny. I just watched AHDN on the Criterion LaserDisc with the funny 5.1 songs, for the first time in years. My girlfriend had never seen any Beatles movie (no, she's not 22...).

Huh? The Criterion LD wasn't 5.1. Heck, Dolby Digital didn't even exist as a THEATRICAL format when "AHDN" came out as a Criterion LD, much less as a home format!

:shake: :sigh: The songs tried to come out as surround, but were just annoying. The disc has PCM sound, the film sound was mono, but the songs were stereo, mixed for this release with Dolby Pro Logic decoding in mind.

I'm confused - why'd you mention 5.1 in your first post?

The 2.0 stereo Criterion Laserdiscs (separate CLV and CAV releases, IIRC) of "A Hard Day's Night" as well as the 2.0 stereo MPI Home Video DVD, VHS, and Laserdisc releases, featured a mix where the stereo album masters were "dropped in" to the film soundtrack at the expense of some foley effects in some cases. As such, I don't think it was intended for pro-logic decoding.
