If you watch that interview, he doesn't try to name drop Speilberg to prove it was a great movie, but rather something very much of its time.

I don't think anyone was slinging mud at the OP. Only being skeptical - which is completely fair, IMO, when it comes to Apple, the Beatles, these releases which have been rumored for at least the last ten years, and an anonymous source. I'm sure the OP will get his due when an announcement is actually made.

We've had lots of false alarms and legitimate leads here on this board. I'm hoping this falls into the latter. Blu-ray releases of these titles would be awesome.

  3. Well hopefully but what really matters is getting the product. I do agree that the anonymous source makes it difficult to believe particularly in this day and age. You are right though as we've been disappointed so many times. I remember reading somewhere that Ringo didn't want LIB out there during his lifetime because it brought back so many I pleasant memories. We will see.

I did try and go back and edit my post to reflect that the press info at Paul's website was related to the screening but usually a home video release will follow these type of things and the BBC interview sounds.ime it would be cool extra for MMT.

I agree that it'd be nice to get the interviews on the disc as well, since I'm guessing a commentary track with some of those folks probably isn't going to happen.

Maybe the O/P's source was Macca's website--if so, I can see why he'd want to protect its confidentiality. ;)

I like the idea of putting MMT and LIB out together. Although MMT does have its fans, its definitely not one of their best pieces of work and putting it in the spotlight again may not be a great idea in terms of critical re-evaluation and hype (which the Beatles love!). Slipping it in with LIB makes all pressure off MMT as everyone's attention will be on the long-awaited "controversial" documentary rather than an pschedelic movie making experiment.

To start with, I really hope that both films have been remastered to HD standards and will come out on Bluray as well. The restored Yellow Submarine looks fantastic in 1080p and so no reason why these shouldn't get the same treatment. MMT may be released plain jane but I hope Apple loads up LIB to its full potential with tons of outtakes, new interviews, etc. In fact, many of us here on the forum believe that they should re-do the whole film from scratch probably in two parts of say 120-150 mins each. There is so much fun stuff from the sessions that wasn't included in the original. The involvement of the original director makes that idea seem less realistic but there is still a lot of potential for bonus outtakes.

Btw, while they are at it, why not also remaster and reissue A Hard Day's Night and Help on Bluray?

If I were doing the MMT release, to boost sales I would throw in the promos for Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane, Hello Gooodbye, and the broadcast of All You Need is Love, since they were all on the LP. And maybe make a new video for Baby You're a Rich Man. 5.1 mixes for all.

That would make some great bonus extras on the disc and definitely help drive sales. I like the video of Baby You're Rich Man on Anthology where they used footage from the Greek islands trip ad so that's a start there. I'm sure there should be other unused but interesting 1967 footage in the vaults.

That might make the difference for me to buy it. But I would hope the videos for those promo films (SSF & PL in particular) would look better than they do on Anthology.

I find these DVD's hard to believe as it's too good to be true.

Heh...despite my love for it, I cannot disagree with you! A true example of pre-Hard Day's Night teenage film ephemera.

Now, if they'd only release Finders Keepers on DVD...

Absolutely. Are there any LIB promo videos that are not actually contained within the documentary itself? I have a video reel (8 mm, I think) of the "Let it Be" video, but I think this is just part of the documentary.

    A Hard Day's Night is already on Blu-ray: http://www.amazon.com/The-Beatles-Collectors-Edition-Blu-ray/dp/B002JI94J4

Apple doesn't own the rights to A Hard Day's Night, Mirimax does, so that's why it's out on Blu-ray. Apple should've released Help on Blu-ray when the DVD came out.

Only kinda...that's just the Canadian import version of the botched DVD from a few years back. Not really what anyone is hoping for.

That's not my memory of it, but Paul has mentioned the MMT/ Spielberg connection more than that one interview you mention.

Paul claims Spielberg came up to him and said that Magical Mystery Tour was a movie that he and his friends really admired back in their film school days.

I don't know about you, but the implication I take away from Pauls namedropping Spielberg is that if someone as admired as Spielberg admired the film at ANY point, it must be a pretty good little artsy film that maybe went over the heads of the dullard masses at the time.:D

Does Apple even have the rights to the movie?

There's no official version of the film, only b*otlegs.

  21. Not totally accurate. There was an official version released on videotape, videodisc and laserdisc in the early 80s. I myself rented it on several occasions. Subsequent DVD bootlegs are no doubt sourced from these.

Ha! Nice guess, but I put quotation marks around "firm" because the item was never released, despite having a "firm" release date.

Since some of you are throwing around Led Zeppelin, perhaps the Deluxe Led Zeppelin IV? Also, I don't know if you guys want to do this or not, but perhaps starting a separate thread on special reissues and box set speculation for 2012 should be in a separate thread? That way, it won't dilute the Beatles DVD thread we have going here.

Better to speculate for 2013. Everything for 2012 is already in place and fairly well known.

Ah, yes. Forgot about the VHS (and laserdisc) versions. Is there really a DVD one?

Edit: Realized videodisc is not DVD
