Saturday March 12, 2005 marks the 50th anniversary of the passing of the great Charlie 'Yardbird' Parker, possibly the greatest-ever alto saxophonist and, indeed, one of the most influential artists in the history of the improvisational arts. He was just 34 years old when he passed into eternity but in his short lifetime he had totally changed the world of jazz, forever. I'm playing the fine Rhino 'Yardbird Suite' 2CD overview here at work, but I intend to commemorate the great man's work by playing as much of his music as I can over the coming weekend. I'll also hope to find time to watch the great Clint Eastwood-directed biopic 'Bird' which I recently picked up on R1 DVD. Fifty years gone, but BIRD LIVES!
