Story Behind the Song: 'Love is All Around' »

This is a very engaging interview with The Crickets Sonny Curtis, songwriter, about writing his iconic theme song. It is a little long, but worth hearing Sonny, who by all accounts is a great guy. He is so down to earth, and unassuming, then plays the song at the end.

When I had my weekly appointment to watch The Mary Tyler Moore Show, I never thought about the history of the theme song, who wrote it, the ties Sonny has to so many artists and songs that I love. There are so many individual stories involved in pulling off this or any TV show, movie, musical endeavor. And so much talent for each aspect of an artistic endeavor.

I watched the legendary MTM Show episode "Chuckles Bites The Dust" last night. If you unfamiliar with her work, that's a good place to start. Still funny 40+ years later, and she shines during the memorial service.

It wasn't your imagination. It exists, and it's real. It was done in fun by Annie Leibovitz for VANITY FAIR. I don't like pooping on other people's memories so I won't post it here for those who don't want to tarnish how Rob & Laura look in their minds, but a simple search will find it for you if you want to see it.

    She was truly wonderful.
Saddened by a lot of the celebrity deaths in the last year or so, but this one does hit pretty hard.
Sure, a lot of guys fell in love with her, but a lot of girls loved her and looked up to her.

If I'm not mistaken, Trapper John M.D. did an episode that must have been inspired by this MTM episode.
I can't find any reference to it, however.
I remember watching "Chuckles" when it aired way back when, I just watched again on YouTube. Amazing how she could play it so serious, opposite everybody else laughing, for most of the show.
It was called "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," but everybody got their share of laughs.
Everyone was great on that show. What a cast! Ted Knight was a great one as well. My favorite part of Caddyshack.

For those of us born a bit later, she was our Lucille Ball. I loved Mary Tyler Moore, and still have fond memories of watching the MTM show during its original run (with my Mom), despite the fact that I was barely in grade school at the time. I'm probably just stating the obvious, but I don't think that you can possibly overestimate how well-loved and influential she was to so many people. Anyways, RIP.

I just checked the schedule and I guess that my local station isn't airing it.

I wonder who will start chuckling at Mary's funeral service, as a tribute to that great scene? You know that somebody is going to do it!

So far I have seen more clips and footage of Oprah than I have of MTM. I have a feeling this is becoming an hour of more about Oprah than about Mary.
