So Matt had to record one version for the single, one for the soundtrack album and one for the movie, with numerous takes each time. And they call that being Born Free.
Invitation to the Movies seems hard to get hold of. I have ordered a second-hand import two-for from Amazon. I don't know if it was ever released in the UK. All the tracks are on Matt at The Movies. Perhaps thats a better bet!
Possibly although i can't remember what is in Mono/Stereo as it's likely to be mixed. This is a good way to go - which i assume is what you've ordered https://www.amazon.co.uk/Walk-Away-Invitation-Movies-Monro/dp/B00004YNF6 This uses the original Capitol masters (and the Liberty ones for Walk Away, but these will be 2nd gen copies of UK mixes. Occasionally there are slight edit differences on the Liberty albums, but I don't remember any on Walk Away.
Walk Away is just a compilation? All the Invitation tracks are in Stereo on Matt at The Movies btw... Shame about Georgy Girl (Strange Omission?). Qobuz gave me the album because I had bought a few tracks already which was very nice of them. I have still ordered the CD - I can do a comparison...

Thank you very much for all the information Richard, but isn't Sings the source for the Blue and Sentimental tracks? Or is there more than one CD called Matt Monro Sings? - it is a rather generic title I bought The Magic of Matt Monro for the I Have Dreamed tracks because the songs sounded better than on other seemingly PD examples but I would be glad of a recommendation for a legit (even better sounding) release. 'Start Living' on The Magic is the same length as the one on Complete Singles - what is the nature of the edit?
Thanks again Richard. I am a bit confused about 'From Russia With Love & Softly'. These tracks are listed as "Mono Single Versions" on The Greatest. Aren't those versions on Complete Singles?
Just a curiosity factor and a bit off topic, but apart from MM, what other artists do those who subscribe to this thread like and enjoy and of course collect. Some say that MM was the English Sinatra so does anyone appreciate FS.
Yes I like and have collected Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland. I also have collected Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Leonard Cohen, Captain Beefheart, Kate Bush, Katy Perry, Radiohead etc. etc. There is no end to my depravity!
I'm with you on almost everything there. However ... having worked for one day as part of the local roadcrew for Captain Beefheart, anyone who mentions the name in this household is likely to be ejected forceufully and instantly. Until 6 months or so back, this was the worst concert experience I have had in close on 50 years of regular concert-going. To keep on topic - continued thanks to Richard for supplying us with this fantastic information. Best Wishes, David
There are two Matt Monro Sings, This one you already have:-https://www.discogs.com/Matt-Monro-Matt-Monro-Sings/release/10003157 And this one:- Matt Monro - Sings which had a CD release too which is basically Hoagy & I Have Dreamed. Start Living shouldn't be on any PD releases as it's still in copyright. The difference between the two versions is that the single is an edit of two takes, the album version is the complete take used for the first half of the single.
Yes that's how they are labelled, but not what they are on the disc. I put Greatest together in tandem with Singles and purposely put the Stereo versions of From Russia & Softly on Greatest as they were different. However at EMI they got confused by two different versions. Is asked them to change it but it never happened. If the download is a copy of my master (and I can't see why it wouldn't be as I supplied the files!) then i'd ignore the "mono single" tag. From what I remember they even labelled my stereo remix of Russia as Mono Single version. Interestingly the download of "Singer's Singer is still the 2001 master, not the new one.
Right - so this is yet another version Russia? There was the single version The stereo Soundtrack and other Stereo release versions prior to 2011 Then there is the single version mixed for stereo which first appeared on Singer's Singer So what are these tracks? Are they taken from the actual film Soundtrack. I am as confused as EMI
Thomas Truax is what happened 6 months ago!! If you ever have the opportunity, don't! Best Wishes, David
Two versions. 1. Single version in mono (singles collection) and remixed to stereo. 2. Stereo album version . I'll write something up later, as I've been saying I would, that explains the story of "From Russia With Love" from recording to remix and hopefully this will then make sense.
