I have most of them and also only find the two Skynyrd discs worth a listen. However, sometimes if you have tuned your system to the darkside- the other titles are "ok".

Yes it is. You have the right version. The vinyl uses the same cover as the MCAD-37252 CD.

I have both the Buffett masterdiscs, and yes, the SYKBH disc is a
tad bright for these ears but not at all unbearable to listen to.
Changes in Latitudes/Attitudes sounds just fine.

But save yourself some $$$ and get the stock issue MCA CD's .

I have the Buffett box set and IMHO these CD's sound just as good
as the MCA 's. If you have the chance, get the Buffett MFSL titles
    while their still reasonable....

I had the MCA Ultimate MasterDisc B.B. King - Completely well. Too much top end boost! Again, the regular CD was better, IMO.

Renny, I was under the exact same impression...until I started to upgrade my equipment. Then I learned the truth and it was not pretty.

So, Dave, i'm confused. Tell us the "unpretty" truth.

Are you saying that you used to hear a differnce, but after upgrading your equipment you didn't hear a difference between the standard issue and the Ultimate MasterDisc version of "Legend"? Of all the titles i listed in my original posting, that's the one i'm most keen on getting information on (and acquiring if it seems worthwhile).

About three months ago, i did a hi-res upgrade of my home equipment. I'm now using a Rotel RSX-1055 receiver and a Denon DVD-2900 SACD/DVD-A player. As a result, i'm now hearing the sonic "inadequacies" of some of my CDs. It's really a mixed bag - the good recordings sound great and the not-so-good stuff, well, it won't get played very often or will be given away.

I don't have the silver disc...used to have the LP many moons ago...but I don't find this one to be overly bright. Same with the Buffett.

What appears at first to be more detail translates in to boosted frequencies and added compression to achieve a "louder volume" which does impress some. Admittedly, a better analog source for the album, but the original is much more neutral/flat sounding and without the added items above which translates into a better sound at louder volumes to these ears.

Here's the "acid test" that I use....Turn up the volume of your gold disc to a party level (louder than normal listening, provided you don't listen at 80db regularly). Does it feel good on the ears? No audio-fatigue where it's uncomfortable to listen for long periods of time. Not on this gold disc my friend, it bloody well hurts after awhile at this level. Now try the regular first US or current Canadian pressing. No audio fatigue what so ever. I can have this one loud all day long without any pain or discomfort. It's the same with every one of these MCA Gold discs. Not even one, and I have owned them all with approx. 6 exceptions, sounds as good as the original IMO.

Hope this helps a bit with your decision Pete. :)

And stop using compression to raise the volume levels unnecessarily which only takes away from the dynamic range of the original.

"The London Howling Wolf Sessions" Ultimate Masterdisc is not as good as the Deluxe Edition, but it's the only version with the old vinyl inner lyric sleeve reproduction.
I had a listen to the Chess vinyl recently and the Deluxe CD sounded way better (father's system - Kiseki Blue/Linn Ittok/Linn LP12/Audio Research SP10/Audio Research D250 II/Quad ESL63)
