As far as sound I've always liked the Höfner. He always gets great sounds out of his instruments - no two tracks sounds the same. I like the tone he got in the whole Help! album. I really like the bass sound on Honey Don't. Heck add that album to the list too!

Baby, You're a Rich Man, has an unbelievably prominent bass part.

Great player. I was never a big fan of his tone. No highs, all lows and mids. But that was very typical of bass tones in those days. His probably was one of the better ones of the 60's. I like a little top end.

  6. Love the sound of the bass in So Bad. Round, thick, tuneful.

I also love the bass on the Hugh Padgham mix of press, which is on the 10" Press EP and some pressings of the Press CD.

A Paul fan of all the "BIG Beatle Bass"!

    Specific:
"'Paperback Writer' was the first time the bass sound had been heard in all its excitement", said Emerick in Mark Lewisohn's book "The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions". "To get the loud bass sound Paul played a different bass, a Rickenbacker. Then we boosted it further by using a loudspeaker as a microphone. We positioned it directly in front of the bass speaker and the moving diaphragm of the second speaker made the electric current.""
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beatles'_recording_technology
"I read somewhere that Paul went into the studio separately on 'Pepper' and spent a lot of time working on his parts and played directly into the console... "
    General:
"Direct input was first used by the Beatles on 1 February 1967 to record McCartney's bass on "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"."

    Enjoy.

Those early takes of Rockshow from the deluxe V&M have nice weight to his bass that is severely lacking in the album version. I think SLS has a much better bass part the WALHFMF. WOA is his absolute peak in bass playing. Never again equaled by Macca.

Isn't it amazing how the bass sound is on that song, recorded at Olympic? EMI never recorded the bass on a Beatles song like that up to that time. Fantastic.

Baby You're a Rich Man is a great example of the 4001, but I'm also partial to the lefty Jazz bass he used on While My Guitar Gently Weeps and Yer Blues. Really chunky.

For an album, probably Abbey Road.

Another good one from Driviving Rain "Lonely Road", especially the 45 mix.

Paul's Bass playing on Ram & Red Rose Speedway, Wildlife is also a favorite of mine.
I never new Paul was using a Fender Jazz bass, especially on Pepper & MMT, I always thought it was his new Rickenbacker.
I thought he went back to the Hofner bass on the White album.

And he sings too, at the same time. Pretty amazing. However, My favorite playing by Paul is on Sgt. Pepper, MMT, and Abbey Road.

Yes, that is the deepest, lowest bass sound on a Beatles record. It has lots of "slam" as they say in audiophile reviews sometimes.

Why couldn't EMI get such bass on their records at that time and Olympic could? GE raves about Paperback Writer and i don't fond anything special about the bass. BYARM really jumps out at you.

The fuzz bass on "Think For Yourself." Out front and in your face like the bass is playing lead.

"Take It Away". Also, the thinner, more nimble sound he used on "My Brave Face"

No Jazz Bass on Pepper and MMT. Paul first used Jazz bass during the White Album sessions.
